I will be taking some pictures of my two year old grand-daughter at her ballet class this saturday...
Hopefully I will get some good shots and be able to put together a small portfolio to show the dance instructor...
I would like to shoot their recital in June, basically I just want to test the waters, see what it's like to shoot an event...
I know my camera pretty well, it's a Sony F707...I can't justify moving up to a DSLR just yet...
Would you all be so kind as to give me some advice about how to go about this whole endeavor?
Anything you can think of will be appreciated...

Sonifo has some awesome shot of her daughter's dance classes and stuff. I don't know how much she is around here, these days, so maybe send her a PM and let her know what you need. Most of her shots (up until about a week ago) were shot with a camera with a lot less of the capability of your 707, so she may have some really good ideas.

Use a tripod, (or monopod if ya got one... in my kids karate class I use my tripod AS a monopod...) make sure of your camera's settings BEFORE the event, and take as many shots as you have media to hold! I would, even though this seems blasphemous a little, recommend using a slightly smaller file size to get more shots if storage is an issue...

I'm digressing here ... Where can I find more information on monopods. For what situations should I use a monopod rather than a tripod? Any pointers?

Use a monopod when u n'll need to move about alot or when u can't use a tripod.

I'm gonna have to get a couple more memory sticks...
I'll read up on that monopod stuff tonight...
Trying to figure out how to market the shots once I get the portfolio together (if the pics are good enough)...
