Heads up all you gamers in DPCland!

Linky to shocking news story

edit to clarify: um... it is very likely that the article is an attempt at humour. If you have doubts, read the article again with one eye closed, head tilted downward and to the left while you gargle your favourite drink. That always clears it up for me. At the very least, you'll forget about any damn article you happen to be reading as you rush around madly looking for something to soak up the mess you made all over your keyboard :)

Are you suggesting parents are responsible for teaching their children to resolve conflicts by flailing their arms in acts of fruity aggression???

No, I am suggesting that it is the parents responsibility to ensure that their kids dont play these fruity violent games. :P

The Onion is an infamous satiral/humour magazine, with, obviously, an online presence.
There was a funny (?) incident a few years ago when a Christian group took one of The Onion's satirical articles about the Harry Potter books being pure Satanism, believing it to be the truth and just showing their own lack of a sense of humour.

This is the second time in as many days that I've seen people here at DPC astounded by what has been around for years.

Someone started a thread yesterday about the foreign lottery scam, and now The Onion.

Both of these have been around for a loooooooooooooong time.

I would think that by March of 2008, people would be smart enough to at least Google something before they embarrass themselves by starting a thread on something like this.

How can you read the article and *not* know it's a spoof?????

NOOOO! Then they'll all be doing this!

WII is dangerous, A friend of mine broke his forearm. He was playing Tennis on the WII and tripped over a throw rug. Another friend of mine lost his grip on his controller and it hit his wife in the face, She needed 6 stitches on the corner of her eyelid.

In fairness to the OP, if you don't know The Onion then it is possible to get thrown by the satire the first time.

And let's be honest - the Internet and the flood of information (i.e. anyone can publish anything to millions globally) has meant that people in general seem to be much more accepting and believing of media stories (without question) than they should be. It probably works in reverse too, as evidenced by the myriad of controversy theories.

Put your faith in Science - it works (tm) :)

Really? the WII is dangerous? I think you need a new perspective on the situation. ;)

I can appreciate that the system originally did not provide hand straps that were durable enough for strenuous physical activity - but Nintendo addressed the problem with stronger straps.

Saying the Wii is dangerous is a bit like saying Tennis, Bowling, Golf or any other sport is dangerous. Any activity has an inherent danger to it....it's a bit harsh to blame the console and not the user. Or rather, how else could you provide the kind of gaming that the Wii does (for millions) and guarantee that no user would hurt themselves?

The first time I played Wii at a friends house I nearly dislocated my shoulder playing Tennis (trying to knock the skin off the ball!!). I stopped immediately and made comments about what an old fart I had become! But I didn't blame the Wii.... that's my old war injury and me overdoing it (it's a microswitch, not cat gut or nylon strings!) not a dangerous design flaw with the Wii.

Personally if I had kids I'd get them a Wii. The interaction is fantastic and the physical movement/coordination is 100% better than typical "slouched-on-the-sofa-over-a-gamepad" systems....and for kids I'd rather have an active sportier interaction (more real) than the historical couch potato style.

This *IS* tongue-in-cheek, right?????

You cannot possibly blame a game for people being klutzy.

I must have a much firmer grasp on reality.

The wording in that article is sooooooo out there it just really isn't possible, IMO.....to take it seriously.

Aye carumba indeed...! I guess if nobody had ever read The Onion before, they do their best to make things look legit... but... aye carumba :)

My favorite Onion story of all time (which I can't find on the site, unfortunately) was a story that claimed the Amish had decided to give up being Amish once they realized how silly the whole thing was. Absolutely pricelessly hilarious.

Here is a copy of the article.

My favorite story like this was about a story that ran and was picked up by a Chinese newspaper. When they were contacted and informed it wasn't true they were stunned. "What do you mean? This is humor? Who writes an entire newspaper of untrue funny stories?" They couldn't understand. LMAO!

I was just saying that I know two people who injured themselves playing WII games. So in fact the game is dangerous to play too an extent. More so than an Xbox or other systems where you are not going to be swinging the controller around the room. Unless you are one of those people that blame the controller for most mistakes and throw it around because of that.
