Found this dragonfly perched on the ledge of the 2nd floor. With my Tamron 90mm macro, I climbed over (luckily nobody thought I was doing some suicide attempt, lol) and got a full body shot:
And a closer 1:1 macro shot:
Then I pulled out my handy Olympus C-750UZ, reverse-mounted my 50mm f/1.8 and got a headshot:
Later in the afternoon I found this red-eyed fly resting nearer to the walkway at the same ledge (so I didn't have to climb over to the other side):

Those are amazing insect shots. This is something you will never see on a normal day with your naked eye. How far away were you from the dragon fly? especially on that C-750 head shot.

Wow, cool photos!
With all those eyes, I bet his picture of you was pretty wild too. 8^)

Thanks! With my Tamron 90mm, the closest that I can get is around 10cm (actual working distance is 29cm, but due to the way the front element is buried deep inside the lens barrel, practical distance is much less).
For the reverse lens, I believe it was around 2cm away.

Great shots Adrian. I really like the fly.
I am currently looking at Macro options for my Canon G5. The Tele-Converter TC-DC58N and the Close-Up Lens 250D (58mm) are listed as the G5 accessories. They would cost a combined $200 US (approx?)
Together they would give me a 2x zoom? Is this really a macro shot? Is there a rig I can attempt successfully with the G5, you talk about reversing the lens?
Any ideas would be really appreciated!
Thanks

I'm not familiar with the G5, so I can't say how much magnification you can get out of that setup.
Have you checked out this article yet? He uses a G3 which is not very different from your G5....
Hope that helps,

I have the add on lenses from Canon for my G3.. I personally don't think they are worth the money. The telephoto is pretty worthless and the wide angle/macro one has terrible edge distortion. I don't think they give as much as they detract.
I use a reversed 50mm pentax manual lense for macros.. my mundane entry was shot that way. I also this set up for a lot of gem and mineral macros when I need to be really close.
I suggest you look into getting a set of diopters for way less money.. if you want to shoot macros. |
