ok so this was my first post
and i want to know if the title is what people didnt understand? was it the fact that it was kinda abstract? i was trying to bring across the idea that there is a ton of conflict with the issues of religion and how people show their faith. in the world today it seems that in some cases its best to keep your religious beliefs to yourself for fear of persecution and prejudice. most of my comments didnt understand it, but it seems that the ones that did get it, enjoyed it. i already ran a thread about titles and got a lot of people that were adamint that they dont read them, but i was hoping for some more feedback. what would make this a little more obvious? lookin forward to many more posts, its about time i finally jumped in on this...
thanks

It took me more than a moment to understand that WWJD? = "What Would Jesus Do?" - a popular acronynm to remind His followers to stop and think before they act.
I think knowing the context makes this stronger.

I gave you a "6". Some nice textures, composition is pretty good but I didn't understand what it had to do with the conflict challenge. Also didn't understand the title. |

I only found out what that acronym meant about a year ago - and I was raised as a Christian. It is a pretty Ameri-centric title which might explain some of the confusion, and also no doubt restricted to a particular group of people within that country too. |

I'm intrigued by Gordon's comment, because I don't fit in that group at all. I'm not Christian and live in South Africa, yet I understood the title immediately.

maybe I had a sheltered upbringing. I didn't understand all the fish and stuff on cars either. There seems to be a quiet re-enactment of the creationism vs evolution battle going on in those symbols.
Linux seems to be winning in Austin... |

I'm not a very reilgious person either. catholic, born and raised but i guess i thought it was a more widespread thought/saying. i fig that even if people didnt know it immediatly, they would recognize it because stuff about it has been ont eh news and parody'd before. |

For what it's worth, I liked this image but marked it down as it appeared to have little to do with the challenge. The title meant absolutely nothing to me. Don't know if this is because of living in the UK or not but there's certainly a cultural dimension whether it's religion or Brian Boitono/South Park (what do these refer to - see?) |

I still don't get it. I understood the WWJD immediately, but I don't see it in the picture nor do I understand the picture in conflict.
Is it suppose to be the fact that the images in the picture look like a cross, and then the cross has a lock? Or is it something else....
I like the composition of the picture, but it just doesn't come across very clearly. Not that all ideas have too, but this is a stretch for me personally.

When scoring I try not to read the titles. If the title is needed to understand the image then it fails to work on its own. When commenting then the title is usefull since it helps you know what the shooter intended, but if you saw the whole competition up on a gallerey wall, the images that grabbed you could not count on the title to make the case for the image.
I had no problem understanding the title but it just muddied my understanding. I know my scripture fairly well and can't recall any mention of locks. I know he preached hard against property and averice ( laden camel/ eye of the needle & "render unto Ceasar.." ) and that just left me more confused. WWJD? Bust it open? Leave it be?
If it is supposed to be a cross image, then I find the hasp to be too short of balance, too far over on the mullion, so to me it just reads as a locked door.
That said I like the image but feel it would have done better in texturesII than in conflict.

You asked for feedback about your title. I read your title, understood the acronyms, and looked at the picture again and found myself asking, WWJD ABOUT WHAT? In other words, the title didn't appear to support the picture. WWJD about locks? Huh? That was my reaction. I couldn't "get" the meaning in the title to suggest anything about conflict. That said, I liked the picture, scored it a 5. I would have scored it higher had I figured out how it related to conflict. Just my two cents!

I suppose I've lived a REALLY sheltered life... I consider myself fairly well read, and have lived in the U.S. all my life (57 years), but really couldn't figure out what either acronym meant. I actually guessed that WWYD *might* mean "What Would You Do", but was very unsure.
The other one, WWJD, I didn't get at all, had never heard... It seems like an elitest, insider acronym to me (...guess I'm on the way to Hell in a hand basket, eh?) |

I didn't vote on this one, but it would have scored very well with me.
I wouldn't get the message without having to look at the title, but that doesn't bother me any, as there is a different type of conflict without the title.
I think it's very strong image. |

In Los Angeles, WWJD is everywhere. It's on the back of so many cars. You go to public places, and there are people handing out keychains and neckbands.
So I can understand how it maybe it's something known outside of big cities. |

Naw, It's the letters on the keys...which one to choose. especially when you can't read the letters on the lock.
Hmmm maybe that explanation is a bit too analogous. |

Aha! That explains it. I live in Buffalo, WWJD is nowhere. It takes ahwile for a fad to arrive here from the West Coast. (Or, maybe we're just a city of atheists??) |

Personally I scored this low due to it having nothing to do with the subject. Your title shouldn't have to tell me taht. The photo should. Nice texture . . . but still what has this got to do with your title?? Would he unlock it?
I knew what the symbols meant in your title, just didn't see the conflict

The conflict is in the secrets locked behind the church doors vs. what is revealed to the parishoners. WWJD = do the right thing.
Therein lies the conflict from within the church.
At least this is what I get out of it.
Be happy with your photo. A bit more focus, or less sharpened, ..... you're doin' fine ;) |

Smack me if I'm wrong (no, please don't), but my interpretation is that the lock bracket and its mounting in such a rotted piece of wood renders the lock useless, other than to say, "Please Keep Out."
The conflict therein lies in the viewer's respect for others' property or privacy.
No? |

Justin:
I thought the photo and the title were excellent. I gave you an 8. Can't believe you didn't even break 5! I think it's great to be able to take a photo that means something to you and yet so many different things to different people based on the religious beliefs that the photo is about keeping locked up because they can be dangerous in a social setting. That's the beauty of religion. It creeps down into all the aspects of everyday life inspiring conflict where it often shouldn't be. People are quick to judge each other. It can be an elephant in the room. I like people that can see elephants.
I think the WWJD in LA is actually What Would Jesus Drive, dealing with the SUV issue. :)
