Over the few months I am going to try and save for some new equipment. I do not know if I should go with a lens for a camera. Right now I have a D40, 18-55mm, 55-200mm, and a 70-300mm. It always helps me save money if I have a clear goal in mind. If I am going with a camera I would most likely wait until I can afford a D200 or possibly a D300. If I go with getting a new lens I need some suggestions, if anyone on here can help me out it would be great, thanks ahead of time. |

What is it you want to do photographically, but can't with your equipment?
In other words, how is your gear holding your photography back?

As a general rule, invest in quality lenses. Camera bodies will come and go. Your D40 is a fine body that will work fine with a high quality lens. When you upgrade to a D200 (or whatever), your lens investment will still be there, ready to reward your wisdom. |

You already have the long end covered.
Here's the thing. Without knowing what you shoot, anything anyone says is garbage. And buying glass simply to have a savings goal is silly if the glass sits on a shelf or isn't used to it's full advantage.
With that said... What are you goals in photography? |

I mostly do automotive and motorsports but I would like to get into travel and urban as well. |

At the risk of giving you useless advice, I must say that i really really enjoy prime lenses and you don't appear to have even the most basic 50mm in your kit. Why grab one of those plus an 85mm or 105mm lens? |

I am/was interested in one of the 50mm for one they are relatively cheap but I was playing around with manual focus and I just do not seem to have a knack for it. I don't want to sound rude but incase you don't know the D40 must use AF-S lenses and only manual focus will work on others. |

Then you really don't need more long lenses.
For automotive, get a prime lens for it's sharpness. Zoom isn't important since you have feet.
Motorsports, I'm not sure on, but I'd think you've got it covered already.
Travel and Urban, I'd suggest going wide. |
