hi, i am more or less into fashion photography only... since my 18-135 kit lens does not have enough sharpness or quality, i am looking forward to buy a new lens. most suggestions lead me to think of buying a nikkor 70-200 , as it offers excellent sharpness and bokeh .. i am wriitng to take suggestions from the photographers on this website, so that i can finally decide the lens to purchase. please write your suggestions :)...

fashion is tough to give recommendations... are you in a studio, are you at shows, do you have control over how far you are from the models? all this plays in.

Really you just need a quality, fast lens. any of the f2.8 lenses will give you great bokkeh. the primes are a bit sharper and many are f1.8 or less.

my suggestion would be 85mm, 24-70, 70-200 or 50. Depending on the shooting environment. If you are in the US, I have a rental company and have all of these. Check it out and rent something to see if you like it.

If you're shoot outside, I'd sad hell yeah, go for 70-200, but in a studio it might get a bit crowded.

As far as shooting photos of women from tight crops to full body, I love my 50mm and 85mm primes. Mostly, I will shoot with the longest lens that distance allows me, because I enjoy the bokeh and flattening effect of longer lenses. Well, not too long, I don't want to lose communication with the model.

I really like my 70-200. Not sure about fashion shoots. Most of my outdoor shots are taken with my 70-200 and its very affordable

35mm 50mm and 85mm are probably the best prime lenses to have for portraits.

for studio work i love my tammi 28-75 f2.8 (you won't top the sharpness and contrast of that lens with any prime imo, except with the nikkor 60 2.8), outside i mostly use 85 1.8

Well, I shoot Canon, but I'm sure that Nikon has lenses comparable...I love the 70-200 2.8 when I have room, and the 24-70 2.8 when space is tighter. I want to pick up the 85mm, and have had good results with the 50 1.4 (but sold it once I got a Sigma 30 1.4 because I find I use the sigma much more and want to pair that up with the 85mm)

I had a long talk with a crew of guys that shoot fashion and they all use prime lenses.

Bugzeye selection covers it (35mm 50mm and 85mm are probably the best prime lenses to have for portraits)

The Nikon 28-70mm 2.8 will cover a great deal of that ground. A few of the same guys swear by that lens, as well....even the ones that shoot Canon.
