I performed a sex change operation on my bird! ;-)

Entry

Some commenters wondered about the markings on this mockingbird. Now they know why!

The sex-changed version is pretty, but I prefer the original! (But yes, I know this is DPC and all....) Clever editing, though!

Thanks to continous AF. That one came straight at me :)

A couple of mine. I find it interesting that Florida Cardinals are so skinny in comparison to the northern birds. In the north they are so cute, plump and cuddly looking!

Nice outtakes all! Enjoyed looking at them. Although the outtakes are lovely, you all seemed to make the right choice in your entry, IMHO. :)

Actually birds puff themselves up when it is cold to keep warm, I guess it doesn't get cold enough in Florida for them to do that.

My shot bombed...I had spent the day at Homosassa Springs and my mind was just fried by the time I got home - I had so many shots to go through...
Any one of these probably would have done better.

My original (yeh I was not happy about his tail missing but he would not keep still !)

My original entry, which I pulled

Another shot (I have loads of this little fellow)

My Entry:

One of my Outtakes:

I liked the curve branch in this one, but It doesn't compare to the expression and pose of the chickadee in my entry photo. These chickadees are a real struggle to get good shot of. I am thinking though of doing a black and white series of these birds and trying to get more unique poses/actions like I did in my entry.

I like this one much better than what you entered. The bg color accents the bird well, and the diagonal of the branch has a more natural flow for the viewer. This outtake may be a tad underexposed but only slightly and easily fixed with a minor PP adj or two. Add a small dose of sharpening...

...and he/she has a tail! :-D

Thanks, I agree it was a better option but I took so many I missed it when I was sorting through the shots !

Wow, I liked your entry but all of your outtakes would have scored higher from me. Especially this one:

I agree as well, I liked your entry but this shot is really cool! Love the flow it has with the composition and the wind blowing the feathers. Draws your eye very nicely. Great pic!

I was out shooting for the Bird challenge, but no birds were forthcoming. It was a rainy day with dull light. These are two of the shots I got. They are not BW, by the way. I didn't submit either of them, thinking they probably wouldn't do well, and I was probably right - but I can post them here! My would-be Bird submissions.

Not really outtakes, but some commenters mentioned that a different crop or different composition would have worked better. I can agree - but not so easy when looking at the whole scenery:

Original and surroundings:

Submitted picture, which did quite well compared to my usual results:

This was my fall back image. This guy is dead. The weather wasn't cooperating all week and i needed an entry for the LoD. So I called an local taxidermy and they brought this one out side and held it up while I photographed it. I removed the wooden stick he was attached too in post processing.

I actually submitted the one with the Man outstretching his hand after flinging the slice of bread.

At the last 10 minutes I cropped the man out of the picture and enlarged, all in .jpg mode. A mistake since JPG editing looses clarity.

So what do you all think if I left in the bird feeder-man?
What do you think of the other outtakes?

All of these were taken with a borrowed lens, Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM for Nikon, on an overcast wintery afternoon.
