Here is a before and after of an image I have been working on.
I am guessing more will not be a fan of the editing style but maybe some will enjoy it.
Let me know what you think.
BTW, the image was converted to 5 exposures from the original -1.0, -.5, 0.0, .5, 1.0
Seperate exposures converted to HDR in Photomatix and then tone mapped...
Tone mapped image was then taken into PS CS3 where basic cleanup was done along with several dodge/burn techniques

I like the soft look in the after but I love her eyes in the before. :) |

They're the other way around... after is on the left.
I agree though - the softness of the original looks awesome. Might want to just bring the eyes out a bit (like you've done) but leave the rest as it was. Nice image :O) |

Here is amix of the two, mainly keeping the eyes from the final and some of the tone work. |

To me, the after in the original you posted looks like she has a dirty face.
I much prefer the redo. |

I like the original better than the pp shot

I love the detail in the eyes and hair, but not as fond of how it's burned the lines.
I agree, it looks almost like dirt, especially along her left side (right side of photo).
I can see it working well, though, on a weathered face, where you want to bring out those lines. |

If you are trying to make her look older, you did a good job.
If you were trying to just experiment, all I can say is, "she looks older".

I pretty much agree with the general consensus here... was fun playing around in PS though... I think the compromise of the 2 works well... and that the effect would be much more effective when attempting to bring out character in an older subject. Thanks for the feedback folks :)

I like your compromise version best. Nice portrait. |

Perhaps use the eyes, hair and lips from the Tonemapped version and the skin from the from the original? I do like the detail the PP brought out, but not on the skin. A little masking and you might have something cool.

i'd love to see half the eyes of the latter combined with 90% of the former ... |

From this: to this:
1st step was a levels adjust, a slight vignette applied only to the lower portion of the image, a soft filter applied then a custom USM resharpening, finally dropped the red saturation just a touch, as the USM action adds local contrast and popped her cheeks too red. |

great tweak brad I like it :)
I forgot to mention that the "original" is not actually the original, I forgot that before I took the 5 different exposures into Photomatix I blurred them all slightly because otherwise the HDR comes out far too sharp.
