Bingo to Scarbird, honorable mention to Karmat. Carne Asada is a Mexican marinated steak dish. Every mexican restaurant in the world serves it :-)

ETA: "asada" is "roasted" or "broiled" in Spanish...

Can't say I've ever been to a Mexican before, but I'm about to put that right in Texas this weekend ;-)

There ya go! If you don't like really hot food, and do like meat, carne asada is always a safe bet in a Mexican restaurant; it's not very spicy, but it's vaguely exotic. Fajitas is gringo food, not really Mexican at all. Also look for "carnitas", "little meats", which is chunks of seasoned and slow-roasted pork served with tortillas, lime, onion, cilantro, and salsa; you "roll your own" and it's very good :-)

R.

Bear is right about fajita's becoming gringo-ized. Although I still enjoy a good fajita dinner now and then.

The word "fajita" is spanish for a cut of beef we call skirt steak.

I get a kick out of resturants that have chicken fajitas or shrimp fajitas. That's like saying chicken sirlion or shrimp ribeye. ;-)

This is a MAJOR off-topic shift here :-)

Incidentally, I cook my own Mexican food (only way to get decent Mexican here). I have two entire drawers, deep ones, and a pantry shelf devoted to Mexican staples. I have like a dozen kinds of dried chiles alone :-)

Oh I like hot, spicey hot, not sure how Mexican hot differs from Indian hot, but I'm willing to give it a try.
Thanks for the pointer Bear, I'm looking forward to this trip.

If you like the really hot Indian curries etc, nothing the average Mexican restaurant throws at you is going to faze you. In most American Mexican joints, the heat is added at the table with the salsa. Be sure to ask for the special salsa if what you get on the table is too mild for you, as it very likely will be. Most places have a very strong house blend for afficionados.

He's going to San Antonio, right? I think I suggested Mi Tierra. They will cook it as hot as you like!

Hotter then any namby pamby Cape Cod mexican resturant wanna be! ;-)

Mi Tierra's a very decent place :-) And see my earlier post; you can't GET decent Mexican here, and I cook my own. Actually, we DO have one halfway-decent place, Ay Caramba, very nearby, but they are pretty mild for my taste. Not just gringo stuff though, some "real" specialties. They do stuffed squash blossoms in season, for example.

Hey all... sorry about disappearing before. I changed a setting on my preferences page from my PDA, When I saved it corrupted my password (and email address), and I couldn't get back in!

I'll try to guess one, and then pick up where I left off.

Is it Shirley Chisholm?

If so, you need another letter in the last name.
