Well, due to some family issues that my ex-wife caused for me back in Aug/Sept, I had to sell all of my camera gear, so I no longer own anything that I can take a photo with outside of my Blackberry camera phone.
I am looking for a new camera, I know my budget will not allow for a DSLR, so a point and shoot that has nice output would be great. Id like something that takes SD cards since I still have some left, but if I must invest in new memory, no biggie. Id say no more than 400 will be the budget. Iv not followed gear in awhile, and am totally lost on what to look for.
Mainly will use the camera for photos of my children, and some nice artistic stuff. In the past I was using my D50 for some semi commercial stuff, but would not expect to be doing such with a P/S camera.
Thoughts? |

The canon S5 Is is about $325 on amazon. It's a pretty cool camera with lots of bells and whistles. It has all the auto modes plus full manuel controls and it has movie recording cababilities. High ISO sucks on it, but most, if not all, point and shoots suck at high ISO. Trevor~ |

I've been really happy with my Canon S5. Compared to an SLR it lacks in the low light/high iso category, but that will be a problem with anything in this price range and sensor size. Feature-wise it has lots of the capability of an SLR, and even a few things that most SLRs do not, like the tilt and swivel screen.
Here is a review of it I wrote on Epinions.com
Here are all the other user reviews of it on Epinions Dkozin and Howard Creech are both camera enthusiasts and seem to review a lot of different models, so they are good authorities. I do think they are a little on the hard side when comparing it to SLR's, though.
I paid $400 for mine in September. that still seems to be the usual price, but You can probably pick it up for closer to $350 if you shop around.
The Fujifilm Finepix S5700
is a great value as well, though it has more in the way of image quality issues. I did one or two of my early DPC entries with one and then exchanged it for the S5. Still a decent camera that now goes for only $200.

Thanks for the replies. Will be hard going from a DSLR to a regular camera, BUT I just do not have the money to invest into the SLR system, flash, lenses and such, PLUS I really do not need it, as bad as i like it LOL. |
