I tend to scatter stuff everywhere because I cannot make up my mind...
-> pbase, flickr, devianart and smugmug for photography
-> modelmayhem, onemodelplace and solomodels to find practice subjects
Of course dpchallenge is the place where I hang out and talk to other photographers. The others sites are attempts to see how other communities will react to my images.

I also like this site. The categories are similar to dpc - maybe a little better. Although not as immediate as dpc, one has more time on jpg to consider submitting an entry for submission - though there are advantages and disadvantages for either approach. Steve - made you a contact. |

I agree. It's a good site for me because I can't rush images nor do I want to. I also prefer looking at images that don't seem too forced or contrived. The site has a nice flow for me...not commercial or technical at all and in general, artistically driven from what I've seen. A lot of images are quite unorthodox, which is what I really like
Their Noir Theme in particular has some exceptional images.
Jill Coleman has a very cool photo essay running and Jeremiah Ridgeway's From The Front work blew me away. There's more of their work printed in issue 13.

Yes, I agree, have spent most of the day looking at it.

I spend a fair amount of time at JPG too and keep some images there. I like the longer time frames for theme submissions and tend to really dig a lot of the images there, kind of a gritty tone that I like. I also submit at betterphoto.com and I read a lot of posts and such on flickr of course. OH! and a lot of time on strobist for sure
Steve, I made you a contact too.

There are a lot of good places out there... each is good for their own reasons. There are also a lot of bad places that use to be good. They went bad because they didn't stick to the reasons they were good. Sometimes they come back around and sometimes they don't. You will find many of the same people on the same sites. I've found that none of the sites are as good as they were a couple of years ago though. It seems there has been a big shift in people, personalities, socialization and a marked decline in the ability to understand and display humor.
If you want to find some, do a google search on "Photo Forum" or words to that effect. Watch out for the pointnshoot kid-snappers being run by mothers... the forums run double duty as day care centers. ;D

I quite like PhotoPoints although I haven't been active there in a while. I do plan to start entering more photos there, though. It's not restricted to digital cameras, there are no editing restrictions and there aren't any weekly challenges but the level of artistry there is nothing short of amazing. |

I heard about BizarroDPC.com - I heard that their grass is ten times greener and all their members agree on everything from which camera to JPG vs. RAW and they never complain about the contest rules and the same topic never comes up twice in the forums - ALL of their horses are alive. OH-- and the only ribbons won by Icelanders are brown ones.
Site seems to be down now though. Good things can never last. :/ |

OnExposure is a great site. Very different than DPC, but I quite like it there. You don't get to build up your own portfolio, but every image you want to have in your portfolio goes through a screening & approval or rejection process. The rejection rate is quite high. Rejected images can be put into discussion - that way you can get at least some feedback on what others see or don't see in your images. It's slanted towards "art photography". It's geared towards the advanced amateur, but there are some very good professional photographers there also.
Lately I've also enjoyed posting at Photo.net, but that's a huge site, and it's difficult to get meaningful feedback.

Good one, Ken. I can see why it is "down". That domain name is available! LOL!

Microsoft is not the first name I'd expect to hear when someone says, "Professional Photography." Viruses, adware, trojans, sure. Not Photography. |

I hear you. :-(
However, stay tuned...you'd be surprised at what Microsoft is doing with professional photographers and photography in general.
Have you heard of Expression Media? How about the HD Photo plug-in for Photoshop? Want to read about workflow or color and color spaces? Want to know how National Geographic implements their workflow for a particular photography project? Have you heard of the free Pro Photo Shoot?
All this (and much more) can be found at the Microsoft Professional Photography site. :-)

Yeah, my first compulsion was to buy the domain and hastily setup a fake spoof site and then link to it, but one of my my New Years resolutions is to resist those compulsions. So far I'm doing so so, but I find myself twitching like a dying hamster. :( |

Wow, thanks for that link.
The video critiques are just the type of thing I was looking for even though I didn't know it! |
