Very nice, have done a few shots myself and it is not an easy task by any means. I have limited my self to just solor system objects for the time being.
Keep working on it, should try Orion its a great subject this time of year.

Cool. Could you please tell us what settings you used? I've often photographed the sky at night but have ended up with high levels of noise.
Of course I live in Houston and we rarely see stars at night :-) |

I have posted a pic of Orion above.
I took a close up of the 3 middle belt stars and it showed their ture colour, blue.

Try setting the ISO to 200 or 400. But as you said in the begining you are pushing the camera to its limits and I think that you have to get some good SRL and special lenses to photograph the nightsky properly. |

Ok cool, well it looks like its gonna be another clear sky today, so i hope it stays like that for tonight.
I'll give that a shot by turning up the ISO.
Thanks |

I´ve being thinking of Canon EOS 300D but waiting for the relase of Nikon D70, then maybe the price will go down a bit. I´m a low budged guy but if I had $1500-2000 I would be looking at Canon EOS 10D. |

the 15 seconds exposure you are using is good, but bump the IOS up to 400 or 800 if your camera will do it.
here is a shot of Orion I did some time ago, the 707 was mounted piggy back on my telescope
Orion with Sony 707
Camera model: CYBERSHOT
Exposure time: 30.0s
Aperture: 2.4
Focal length: 34.7mm
this is by far my best wide field shot, it is a SINGLE exposure of 150 seconds, manually guided on my telescope.
The milky way
Camera model: Canon EOS D60
Exposure time: 150.0s
Aperture: 3.5
Focal length: 28.0mm

James,
How important is the mirror lockup function on the D60 in this type of photography (in your experience)? The reason I ask is that I know the 300D does not have this function.
Thanks,
Rich. |

Rich, for wide field astrophotography using a wide angle lens , mirror lock up is not needed, sure it will help out if your tripod or telescope is not very stable.
For most of my wide field stuff I have not used the morror lock up.
