Did I get ripped off?
It's my first time ever selling my photos, so when I was approached by a representative of this company, I just agreed to the price.
They're starting up a new company, and she said they could offer me 25 pounds (ie 50 dollars) per photo (they want 13 to begin with). The terms and conditions are great, it's royalty free, so I can still sell the same images again.
I've already agreed and signed the contract, but I'm just wondering if I should have tried negotiating a little, instead of just settling for that? Is that a fair price?
Also, there was a triptych in the images she chose, which was charged as 1 image. Should I have charged it as 3?
Thanks in advance. |

IMO no you did not get ripped off. Hell send them my way. I will take some photos for them.
On the triptych issue I think it is considered one photo.

THANK YOU for the reassurance, rex.
I posted the same thread on another forum, and someone told me it was a horrible deal, that I should have charged between 575-800 dollars per photo.
I was freaking out. :S

The only thing that counts is whether YOU think it's a fair price, and it seems to me that you do.
I think you are not ripped off. It is a lower price than what they might pay at a stock agency, but this company cut out the middle man, so they deserve a little credit. Furthermore, they take 13 pics in one sale, that's nice for you isn't it? I would have taken such a deal, although I am obviously not sure how far they were willing to go.
Look at the triptych their way, they make only one card out of it, so it's only one pic to them, right?
Congrats on your sale :)

13 x $50 = $650, which is between 575 and 800 ;-)
$575-800 per pic is a price for a pro photohgrapher on an assignment, these are RF pics from your portfolio. That's more like stock.

Well, I just took it in good faith when they told me 25 pounds was the best they could offer at the moment, so yeah, I think it's pretty fair.
Also, I'm pretty sure they'll offer more once further along, and if they don't, I'll certainly ask for it. So this is basically a starting point.
13 pics in one sale certainly is nice, yes. :D
About the triptych- that makes a lot of sense.
Thank you. :) |

With someone saying you should have gotten around $575- $800 I think is ridiculous. If you are happy with what you make then be happy you made $650. I am no pro and will never be if that is what I pro charges. My opinion s that the world has gotten too greedy.

I totally agree, rex.
I was astounded when I read that number.
To be honest, it's just awesome having my photos published, let alone getting paid for them as well. So I just think of the money as an added bonus. ;) |

Consider contacting Shutterpug she has sold photos to greeting card companies before. Her pugs are famous. She can give you an idea of what she was paid.

While I agree that its awesome to get published remember that there are many people who make their living taking and selling photos. If people give away their work it literally takes the food off of the plate of many who have paved the way for others to earn money from their passion. So having said that remember its fun to get published but its proper to charge for your work.
MattO
And BTW Congrats on selling your photos. |

BUT, if they said their budget was only $50, and she tried to get them up to $800, then it may be food off of her table, if their budget is just $50. I can't see anyone starting with $50 if they are willing to negotiate up several hundred per cent. :) |

This is one belief that I have never held. There are so many photographers that moan about how those up and coming photographers are willing to "give" their work away, ruining it for everyone. Well, this just isn't so. If this was true, then there wouldn't be businesses in any of the professions making good money because someone would always be taking their business away from them with a cheaper price. There are always someone willing to do something cheaper. If someone wants to blame their lack of making money on people that sell cheaper than them, then it's just a cop out on their part. There are plenty of people that do not consider price as their first reason to buy and many that that is their ownly reason. And a lot more inbetween. I just do not worry if the guy next to me is selling cheaper than I am and I don't worry about the person that doesn't like the fact that I'm selling cheaper than he is.
Itakephotos... it really depends on the market, how much in demand your work is, how you feel about the price, etc. There are people that would have told them no for that price and others that would have said yes to nothing just to be able to have their pictures used. And really, asking if you got ripped off or not of people that have different ideas of what is a good price for a given situation, isn't really going to help you know if you got ripped off or not. What you hear might let you feel better or worse, but you don't know if it's true.
Remember, a good deal is one where both parties are satisfied... no matter who got screwed. ;)

It's basically a royalty-free stock sale, and $50/image beats the pants off what you'd have got if they bought 'em through a microstock agency, so... I think $50x13 is a pretty nice sale myself. I wouldn't sweat it...

Just another on the side of WELL DONE!!! Just to point out another side, your work is NOW a sold commodity, and this could (not for sure, but possibly) lead to other work. More people will see it, obviously! To me, not only did you do okay, you did GREAT!

Congratulations on the sale of your photos!
Your photos will I assume have a by line with your name so you will be getting paid for advertising instead of paying for it. The price you accepted is the price you accepted, whether the best deal in town doesn't really matter. You have an agreement. Be happy your photos were picked for the cards. |

By comparison, an unlimited reprint EL @ iStock costs about $120, of which $30 for the photog. So, $50 is nice for both parties.

Yeah, $50 per photo is pretty darn sweet for an RF sale!

Congrats!! And I also do not believe you got ripped off. Another great thing is that you now have your foot in the door with that company. Keep shooting and be ready for another offer. Maybe even more photos or more money per photo. Nice! |

I was referring to her implying that it would have been enough to get published and that the money was icing on the cake. Not the fact that she was paid $50 per photo. As a freelancer I take less then that for jobs with the local paper, however what I take is the going rate.

If I remember correctly, she received $2500 for a 5 year exclusive, but that was also from a larger company |

Tell ya what: I'll subcontract to you and provide you with photos for $25/shot. You do no work and clear the other $25. Does that give you some idea of what I think of your deal? :)
