I live in Austin Tx. This city is crawling with custom home builders that create some of the most beautiful homes I have ever seen. I would love to get involved somehow and get a job taking photos for the homebuilders online portfolios. Do any of you have any suggestions on how I may approach getting a job like this?? If any of you have done this sort of thing, could you fill me in? Thanks a bunch!

I haven't done that type of photography, but like most other areas I would assume your best bet is to meet with the builders you admire and ask them about their photography needs. Might have to beat the bushes for a while, but might also get lucky.

Job #1 is to build a portfolio of excellent interior and exterior shots. That's a given. Unless you actually KNOW a builder who will turn you loose as a favor, at no charge to himself, to shoot one of his homes to see what you can do, you're going to have to find a home (or several) where someone will let you shoot for "practice".
An ultra-wide lens (like the Canon 10-22mm) is an absolute must for this kind of work. If you don't have one, you need to get one.
I'm a retired architectural photographer, so this is a skill set I have. But I need to know a lot more about you and your work before I can advise you.

This thread is dealing with a similar topic. shadowi6 has been doing exactly this kind of work, apparently, and he has shown some nice examples of small-format architectural work and has some excellent advice.

I currently do this on a freelance basis for realtors in the Baltimore/Washington area. I work through Obeo, and they are national. You might want to check them out. |
