1. use RawEssentials to get seven exposures from one photo. (-3,-2,-1,0,+1,+2,+3). Leaving all other adjustments the same.

That's a SEVEN STOP range and you can't possibly have that much information in a single RAW exposure. If you need that much range, you need to do multiple exposures. If you push the range too far in this "creation" phase you get VERY muddy images. I know, I've tried. Try recreating an HDRI file using only the single exposure that looks best overall and the two that bracket it.

Ok... I applied the overlay-lighten layer. I couldn't figure out how to do the black to transparent gradient overlay though...I've never done that before. But here is the new version...

Hope that give you a good example.

When I saw that I thought you'd taken the shot in the same place as my HDR attempt!!

The composition and landscape looks very similar (in the thumbnails anyway). I prefer your HDR editing to mine though.

In the thumb IT does look strikingly similar.

Layer/new layer

mode = overlay

click box for overlay-neutral

make color picker default black/white

choose gradient tool

search for foreground-to-transparent

draw from bottom up to building

fade layer opacity to 30%
