I've never had much time to enter any challenges, but I love seeing the photos that are produced by some very talented photographers at dpchallenge. I've been a photojournalist for going on eleven years and often get inspiration for my photography from here. What I saw when looking at the photojournalism III challenge was very disappointing. A lot of the photos are staged or you have no idea what the subject is. I thought this was going to be a good challenge to look at I was very wrong.

Interesting statement. What were your top picks for the challenge? I'm curious because you have experience in the field.
Would love to see your work. Why not join as a member and post some examples.
I must say that I mostly agree with your 11 comments made so far...although usually the receivers of comments on this site prefer more etiquette displayed. Not something I prefer, though. Please feel free to critique any of mine. ;)

Maybe it's hard to come up with great journalistic photos within a week? Photojournalism involves being where the action is. If there isn't any action, you have to go find it, stage it or sit the challenge out.

Hmm - while I agree that there weren't a lot of shining stars in that challenge, I don't know that it's really helpful to make such a blanket statement.

And I don't mean to be rude, but this is pretty harsh for someone who hasn't participated in any challenges. Maybe you're a seasoned professional, but you don't have any experience in a DPC challenge.

I also have to agree with emorgan - most of us are hobbyists who find a spare minute here and there to take shots. Not really conducive to photojournalism. Perhaps you could have submitted something to show us how it was done?

Edit to add: However, you'll note that I didn't enter Photojournalism because I had nothing for it. If your point is more people should be able to do this, then I agree with you. =) But I sympathize with them also, because it's fun to enter challenges and hard to admit that you have nothing for one.

For dpc, I agree. I imagine your statement wouldn't be well received from an editor ;) if you shot photojournalism for a living. I would guess it would be a difficult profession to on short notice get the shot!

Overall, I thought the PJ entries fell short, too. It was a difficult challenge for "the hobbyists" I suppose...but that's what we come here for, isn't it?

The main reason I think most of the images didn't measure up to my idea of good PJ is that they tended to lack "story." Technicals are one thing, but in PJ it's more about the story. ...and I don't mean "captions." Captions expand the story, they add important details but "The Story" needs to be in the image.

To me, a good PJ image makes me ask a question. Where is that fire? How did that car end up there? Why is he dressed that way? Etc... I'll never read a caption if there's no question in the image.
