Fall colors are here and they are going to get even better next weekend. If you are up for a hike speak up and we can talk about trails and times. If not, check out some photos from yesterday.

This place is accessible by train if you don't have a car.

Meeting time:
11:30AM-12:00PM

Proposed plan:
- Start at the meeting point marked on the map. Which is the trail that leads to railroad.
- Hike up the mountain, take photos, have lunch somewhere on top. Not sure how far we want to hike so we'll decide based on the trail conditions and how people feel.
- If we have energy, hike to Trukey Hill Pond. Overlook trail is uphill but lake trail is fairly flat so we can do that.
- At the end of the day drive over to Perkins Drive. We can shoot sunset there and rest up before drive home.

What to bring:

- Boots. Mud, rocks and all kinds of stuff can be on the trail. Be ready.
- Water. Better bring extra just in case
- Lunch. We are eating on the trail or picnic area.
- Tripod. It gets dark with all the trees around.
- Snack bars just in case.
- Camera with lenses. Duh!

Although I can't join you, I grew up around this area and would love to go. Some fall I will drive down from the Albany area and photograph the Bear Mtn Bridge. It is incredible in the fall.

I'm actually looking for ideas. I was thinking of a hiking trail off rt9W. I heard it has nice views of hudson. Then perkins memorial drive or turkey hill pond overlook for sunset. I'll post more info when I get home tonight but I would like to hear your suggestions as well.

I'd have to investigate. I've mostly just taken pictures of the Bear Mountain Bridge, and the Overlook up Perkins Memorial Drive.

I'm starting a map which I'm hoping to keep updating during this week:

I did a bit of reasearch and I think it would be cool to hike to Dunderberg Spiral Railway.

Few links and descriptions:
//www.columbia.edu/~brennan/dunderberg/begin.html
//www.bearmountain.net/advent_1.htm

"The hike starts with a strenuous ½ mile uphill section but does not require any rock scrambling -
After that it's mostly moderate going along scenic trails with
stunning Hudson River views and even a few railroad tunnels from the original 1890s construction."

What do you guys think?

I'm a possibility for Sunday. No guarantees, but I'm keeping an eye on the thread.

Would love to come, but I have other obligations :( It seems my schedule is making me miss out on all the good Fall photo trips. :(

Seems like a straight drive for you on i87 isn't it? We'll miss you.

One important thing we need to decide is starting time. Would 12:30-1PM give us enought time?
10/26/2007 03:42:35 AM · #21
All things being equal, I would rather meet up in the morning, less traffic, smaller crowds, etc

It is a bit of a drive for me so I would have to get up early. If others want I'm cool with 10-10:30AM.

Stephanie, what do you think?

Honestly, 12:30/1:00 sounds good for me. I'll be out late Saturday night for a Pre-Halloween party and I don't know what time I'll get home. But if you guys want to go early, by all means go without me. I don't want to hold you up. I'll just go out by myself.

Stephanie
