Ok...I have a laptop that will check usb and boot from usb first. When I plug in old drive with Win 98 on it, it starts to boot...splash screen comes up but then I get the message:
Not enough memory to load. Check Autoexec and Config.sys and "unload" some programs. I checked those two files and they are "bare bones"
Anyone know a solution or what "memory" the message is referring to?
Thanks,

AFAIK, Windows requires too much memory to be run from a memory stick, i.e., it requires more memory than offered by your computer's RAM.
You might try the Linux based KNOPPIX, it runs from a CD without any installs. Helped me backup my harddisc when Windows didn't start any more.

Winders isn't gonna behave well at all over USB. Way too bloated, even 98. As mentioned, that's more useful for "light" OSes such as KNOPPIX.

I figured "ram" would be in there somewhere. However, I'm booting from a "half filled" 6gig drive from my old laptop.
It almost works but stalls and says not enough memory...

It is easily done with VMWare Ace 2. I run Windows Server 2003 off of a 8GB stick. XP or Vista wouldn't be an issue. I had XP and Vista running off of a 40GB USB drive using VMPlayer. Plenty of space even on an 8GB stick.

I'd really like to be able to run my "win 98" machine as a usb on my vista machine.....it almost works...just that "memory message".

Just guessing, but how do you have the virtual memory configured? If it is pointing to the USB drive, you could very well not have enough space available.
I have never tried this, so its just a guess. |

USB OS booting is a bit of a black art at the moment, there are many different standards that motherboards support (USB-FDD, USB-ZIP, USB-HDD etc) and different things apply to each situation.
Google is your friend. I tried to do XP some time ago, but gave up in the end. Way too many variables. I hope you do better.
BootitNG seems to be the utility of choice for partitioning USB sticks and having a menu on startup. Expect to do a lot of research, but if it's doable chances are that someone else has already done it and posted a how to.
Good luck

Incidentally, last week I installed Ubuntu 7.10 on an external USB drive and got it booting, quite easily. Linux is good at this kind of thing. With Windows you face an uphill battle - it generally wants to install on the primary partition in your internal Hard Disk. |
