You should loan your friend your 5D until the XT is repaired. That's the civil thing to do.

1) Break out the tears
2) hide the evidence
3) Buy him dinner
4) Tell him/her what you did.
5) run away or beg for mercy

Then offer a reasonable compensation.
You can find a Rebel xt for cheap.

10/06/2007 09:40:21 AM · #9
not yet ^_^' i hope i didn't speak too soon. i think you should try paying for the repairs, and like other people said, lend her either a really good camera or your best one. also, tell her you are sorry at least one hundred times :] good luck!

Have you tried it with a different lens? The symptoms sound like there may have been damage to the lens, and not to the camera body.
The focusing screen may be dislodged inside the camera, making it so that the camera cannot focus.
Good luck with both the camera and the friend.

Hey, she let you handle it, she's got to accept SOME of the blame! Factory-repaired should be enough; why should she get something better than she had (i.e. new)?

i think the karma factor is the issue here, her xt was nearly new and now the camara will have soem scratches and the karma of a operation on her

You say that the camera will shoot manual, so try a shot manual, using the focusing range scale on the lens set to the distance to the subject. If the image comes out sharp, then the focusing screen may be the whole problem.

Have you tried looking inside the camera with the lens off to see if the focusing screen ( at the top inside, the ground glass plate) is still firmly in place. On a lot of DSLR's they can be changed by pulling out the one and snapping in another one. If it gets knocked loose, then the camera will not be able to find focus using auto focusing.
I guess you will not hurt the camera by looking and checking it, as you will need to have it repaired anyway.

Sounds like its probably one of the pins that is depressed where they connect up to the lens. It happened to me with my 300d - I was lucky as my insurance covered me. Off course it could be something completely different, but I had the same symptoms.

hey If your friend's camera is still under warranty, there's a chance of Canon fixing it for free, you need to be nice to them though...talk to them and give it a shot...I never experienced dealing with Canon ...but heard pretty amazing stuff Canon does to their customers...good luck...

ohhh and don't foget to buy her flowers, lots of flowers...it always works...

I'm sorry to hear what happened to you..

Just give it a shot with Canon and see what they can do for you..I don't know how much a new XT costs in Peru, but B&H in the US has it for $449.99 (body) and they ship worldwide.

I like your idea of buying her a new camera because when she got her camera back from Canon Service Center, even though it works perfectly, I'm pretty sure she'll never have the same feeling for it..she'll probably think that there's always something wrong with the camera...

I hope everything works out for you...good luck

I sent a Canon camera in for warranty repair and had in back in about 2 weeks.

For non warranty repairs I believe they have a standard fee no matter what the repair. Do some digging on their site and you may be able to find it? Being non warranty I'd guess turn around time would not be as fast though.
