I will soon buy the Canon 40D, but what lens should I buy for a start?
I don't think I want the Canon EF-S 17-85mm IS USM since it has got some pretty poor reviews.
Do you guys think the Canon EF-L 17-40 mm f: 4,0 USM has enough zoom for daily use - portraits etc.?
Please let me hear from you. I need some good advices.

Meh, its ok... not incredibly sharp and the f4 could be faster, but it is well built but i found it too heavy, too slow and not enough range at the long end. I bought the Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 and it's better in practically every way except not built as strongly.
But try the 17-40 and see what you think, but better lenses are available for less money.

This is my favorite lens, and I seem to find it so hard to take it off my camera, to use my other lenes, since I brought it 6 months ago.....
Canon EF 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM

I'm so glad you said that because that is the lens I am getting with my 40D :)

I just brought a hood for mine, so will be using it a lot more during the day now.....especially in the summer, here in Australia.

| i agree, the Canon EF 28-135mm lens is a great walk around lens, it doesn't go as wide as i'd like to sometimes but its more then sufficient. |

I recently bought the 40D with the 17-85mm and find it a really useful lens for walking around. Given the low price as part of the Canon 40D package deal, it is hard to say 'no'.
To that, I have now added a 100mm 2.8 macro and the 70-200mm 2.8 - I plan to get a 2x extender to complete the range. I still shoot crap photos, but at least they are shot on good quality gear!

I'd have to say my 28mm f/2.8 is my daily use lens. It's a "normal" lens on a cropped sensor camera. I love it and sharp as a tack.

I'm looking to pick up a 24-70 f/2.8L as my main lens, but for right now my walk around lens in a 35mm f/2.0.
The 24-70 is a little long for some people, but it addresses the range that I need for much of my portrait photography.

I was a tad bit worried about it being a bit too long when I got mine but as it turns out I havent run into many times when its been an issue and the sharpness/color/contrast/speed of the lens is awesome, which it should be for an $1100 peice of glass :) |

| No one mentions the 24-105 F4L? That lens rarely left my 30D. 70mm is too short for a jack-of-all-trades lens even on a crop in my experience. |

I have one and almost never use it. I find it soft and slow (in the sense of focus and aperture), with not so great colour or contrast. It gets slightly less use than my 24-85, but that's because I don't even know where that is.

Almost same here. I use the 35/2. Really love that lens. You'll need an L-zoom to beat its quality (the 16-35 f/2.8L is on my wishlist, but then again, that's a pretty long list. |

| The Tamron 28-75 is my workhorse. The quality is top-notch, and it's a third the price of Canon's 24-70... with a longer warranty, too. I'd love to have a 24-105 f/4L, but the new Sigma 18-200 OS looks like an interesting alternative. |

| Having the 40D a 1.6x crop factor I'd would go for the 17-55f/2.8 instead of 24-70 if you like to shoot landscapes. If you have a limited budget then take a look at the Tamron 17-50f/2.8 it is a bargain lens for the optical quality it offers. |

For me, the term "daily use" means nothing. The lens that I need/want depends on what I think I'm going to be shooting.
Are you going to take pictures of animals - you'll need a long lens
Are you going to take pictures indoors - you'll need a low light, medium to wide lens (most likely a prime)
Landscapes - wide
Nature - wide to medium zoom
Separate subject from background - fast prime
Close ups - Macro lens (or extension tubes)
Even at a family get together/just hanging out situation, the lens need will be vastly different depending on if it's outside/inside/evening/daytime |
