I am new to digital and I have a Canon 40D, with a 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM and 100mm f2.8 macro. I find the 17-85 a good all round lens and use it to shoot almost everything. I am still getting to grips with the 100 macro. However, I know I am going to want to capture more distant subjects. Since I have the range up to 100mm covered, I am thinking that a 100-200mm or a 100-300mm would be the choice. The subject matter is likely to be landscape (rural and urban), candid people studies, etc.
What are the main things to consider and what recomendations do my fellow members have? Money is no object, but I don't want to spend heaps if a lens at half the price will give me 85% of what the more expensive one can do.
Appreciate you help on this.
Mike

Your decision, in large part, rests on whether or not you need a fast lens (f/2.8 max aperture) or whether a slower lens will do. In fast lenses, the clear choice is one of the two versions of the 70-200 f/2.8. The non-IS version goes for about $1100, and the IS version for about $1650. If a slower lens is OK (f/4 or f/5.6) then one of the 70-200 f/4 lenses (again IS or non) or the 100-400L are possibilities.
The above are the best options in the range.

Canon 200mm f/2.8L prime. Check it out. Relatively inexpensive, sharp as a very sharp tack. |

www.photozone.de is a good place to find quality lens reviews.
I have the 80-200 range covered, but if I were to do it again, I'd probably go for a slightly different range, probably longer, maybe the 120-300 f/2.8EX by Sigma. The 80-200 is really going to shine when I save up enough to go FF in about a hundred years or so.
Also, check the 2nd hand market at www.fredmiranda.com

Nothing can beat the 70-200 2.8L IS at this time. I had the 100-400L as well, but regretted it later :) - in comparison only.
