Greetings DPCers!

I'm particularly proud of the shot I did for the August Free Study and thought I would share the story and the message behind it.

Here is the shot from the challenge:

Here are the shots that made up the final challenge entry:

I think the final shot was a bit deceptive. It is clear that the final shot was a product of multiple images, some even commenting that it looks that way. And even thought the pipe is from a separate picture, what's more deceptive is the fact that the industrial pipe is actually a part of the real background.

I originally took the shot at a rally/march organised by a grassroots organisation based in the South Bronx called Mothers On the Move. One of the issues MOM works on is Environmental Justice and the EJ Committee has been organising the community to fight a fertiliser plant that basically makes the entire South Bronx smell like poop. On a nice Summer day, the smell is unbearable!

NYOFCO, the plant peeps, are planning to build some alien-like egg plants to ship all the poop from across NYC to the South Bronx to fertilise it. They want to do this at the new and very beautiful park called Barretto Point Park, the place of the picture and the rally. Community members did a mock funeral procession to the park with coffins and masks, like Zadaya, my model, is wearing. It was a very powerful march and a moving rally. For more nfo on this & MOM check out their website where my pic is being used as part of the slogan to save the South Bronx.

If you're ever in NYC or live here, the park is quite something to check out. It is one of the most beautiful parks that I have ever been to while at the same time the stinkiest place I have ever had to endure. Quite the contrast and thus the inspiration for the title of the pic.

Thanks for explaining! It's always interesting to hear the back story.

I think you might have also been influenced by William Carlos Williams. Notice the last two lines of this poem.

This Is Just To Say

I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox

and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast.

Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold.

That's interesting tho I've never heard of WCW. Not much into poetry other than Rabindranath's. WCW seems intersting tho, may check it out. THanks!
