Hello -

I've read some posts here on this lens, but they've made me all the more confused. Does anybody have any opinion on replacing some or all of the following lenses for a Nikon d80:

1) Nikon 18-70 3.5-4.5 ED

2) Nikon 70-300 AF 1.4-5.6 ED

3) TOKINA ATX PRO 12-24 F4 Dx Wide Angle

4) Nikon AF 50mm f/1.8D

with

a Nikon 18-200 mm F/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF DX VR Lens

The reason for the switch would be 1) to reduce the need to keep changing lenses, 2) to keep the sensor clean, 3) better image quality due to vibration reduction.

I shoot everything from weddings to sports to landscapes to flowers. On which of these would VR be useful? Are there any drawbacks to the VR? Do I lose image quality by consolidating lenses?

Any opinions you guys have would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Matt

If I were you, I'd keep the Tokina and the 50mm 1.8 for sure, just because they're both too good to give up. The 18-200 is a good all around lens, but it doesn't do all that well at wide angle (noticeable distortion). If I were you, I wouldn't worry about having to change lenses either; do it while the camera is turned off, and in a clean environment (like, don't change lense while pointing the camera into the wind). Blow dust off the sensor regularly and keep camera/lenses clean all around, the sensor really doesn't get that dirty if you're careful.
