So my 1st DSLR is on the way. It is the XTI. I went on line an downloaded the manual to get a head start. I will plan on learning to work with RAW format and was reading about the software Canon provides for RAW processing. I was looking for some advice on this topic. I also own Elements and expect I can download an add-on to process Canon RAW files in Elements. Would you recommend working in the Canon software or Elements. (upgrading to CS3 is out of the question at this point).

I will have to go look for the elements add on.

which version of elements do you have? The latest version of it has the same raw processing engine as cs3- adobe camera raw 4.1 I believe. Very powerful tool, I haven't used the canon software but it's probably better. It's better than nikon capture, that's for sure.

I think that might be too old for you to get the updted camera raw. You can try the canon software, or you could use camera raw 3.7. Still a very powerful raw processor. It's really up to which you feel most comfortable using.

I heard that Adobe Lightroom has a RAW processer very much like that in CS3. I don't know if maybe Lightroom is cheaper? Otherwise, I'd try for some sort of Elements version. The Digital Photo Pro software that (used to?) come with Canon cameras works, but it's limited, and painfully slow.

Canon's DPP (digital photo pro) is great and updated 2 to 4 times a year - and it's free as ar e the updates.

Canon has a tutorial site for it as well - it's not hard to use and is fast and good, but not intuitive on how to use it (like photoshop in that respect)

You can get the RAW update for PSE4. I've heard good things about DPP, but I haven't used either RAW software enough to offer an in-depth comparison. Using DPP will add another step into your workflow, but it's also designed specifically for the .CR2 files. I have to agree with Prof_Fate about DPP not being as intuitive, although it's not hard to use. DPP and PSE's update are both free, so get them both, and see which one you like best

One of the nice things about DPP is you can tether your camera to your computer/laptop via USB and review images on the screen as you shoot. Obviously not practical in all situations, but hella nice when it is.
