This is partially in on topic, I promise. I'm very new to the site, and... well let's just say that calling myself an "amateur" would even be kind when it comes to any kind of photography. I know that it has to be somewhere, and I've looked, but I must also now be blind! Could someone direct me to instructions on setting the date on your camera?

See, and you thought it wouldn't tie in. hehe

Ha Hahaha, Hi Lindsay,
Here, Try this, I hope it helps.

This thread has taken a decidedly silly turn.

Setting the Date

That was more information than my brain can even process! But, little brain and all, I still got the date set properly. Thanks so much!

oh, i'm totally with you guys. i suppose calling it a DQ gallery was not the best choice of words... because i wasn't looking at it as a way to teach people a lesson--but merely for the lost art.

i was basically just lamenting the loss of some of the pics--konador's first entry, for example, and many more that i can't even think of off hand--but were fabulous. no big deal, i was just saying that i wouldn't mind having access to some of them. hm. how about having a *lost art* gallery? :) could be fairly cool.

Here ya go :) I reuploaded it, but unfortunatly it didn't magic back my ribbon, hehe

For me personally, the thing that is most likely to catch me out on DQ is having the correct date/time set on my camera.

On my S5000, if you remove the batteries for anything more than six hours it resets the date/time back to the factory defaults; this is quite annoying when you only have a two battery charger and it takes seven hours to charge! When you're in a hurry it's very easy to overlook the settings when you pop the batteries back in, and start snapping away for the current challenge oblivious to the fact that all the photos you're taking won't be valid entries.

In fact, this is exactly what happened when I took some shots for the Point of View challenge last week. When I realised my mistake I had to delete all the photos I'd just spent ages taking, and start all over again. I lost some good shots, too. :(

So now I've gone and bought a four battery, two hour charger in order to alleviate this problem. Hopefully, I won't be making the same mistake again too often in the future.

Make sure you change your date/time settings when you travel too. My recent ribbon shot was questioned because the time on my camera was set to Greenwich Mean Time (I live in the UK) and my picture was taken in Central Standard Time. Thus it appeared from the EXIF data that the picture was taken at midnight - a clear impossibility for a sunset shot.

The site council member who approached me about this situation handled the it well. The matter was cleared up with a simple explaination and no further questions were asked.

I applaud the site council in their efforts to crack down on the pervasive use of out of date pictures. Thanks for keeping this place honest!

I like how the council is dealing with dq's. My only dq was one I asked to be dqed because I read the December rules wrong. It was a good photo too. I cloned a 1/4" square area of a shadow, but turned myself in none the less. Honesty speaks of honor and we all should strive for that. You can put mine on the wall of shame it was a good photo.

I just think there have been some really fabulous shots that are no longer available for viewing..and i kinda miss 'em. :)

They can easily post the shot in their portfolio, if they are a member.
