Hello, I'm new to challenges and posting, I'm a regular visitor of the site, but now I would like to post an entry to the Backlighting Challenge, It's under the basic editing, my question would be:

I have an image with some levels and curves adjustment layers, I've flattened the image and (here's the deal) I'd like to apply the "Black and White" adjustment of PS CS3 and then use the "Fade" command in the "Hard Light" blend mode, is this legal? Thank you for your answers.

Ed.

I don't think it would be legal, as adjustment layers can only be applied in normal mode in basic editing, as far as I can recall.

Nope, sorry. Adjustment layers may only be used in "normal" mode.

(eta; I'm slowww)

I think I was not very clear, I will not create an adjustment layer and change the blend mode, Instead I'll be clicking on Image/Adjustments/Black and White, and then Edit/Fade... and selecting "hard light" from the drop down menu, then OK. I would not make use of an adjustment layer, but instead two commands.

From what I read in the Rules there's nothing aginst it, but I'm new at this anyway, thankyou very much.

This is the part that would make it illegal. You can only do things in basic editing in normal mode...

Nope, in basic editing you can only use adjustment layers, and blend them only in "normal" mode. You can use fade, but again, only in "normal" mode. "Hard light" is definitely not basic editing.

[he, he, just to repeat what others said here]

Choosing 'hard light' IS changing the blending mode. ONLY normal mode is allowed for basic editing.

FWIW, if you tinker with the curves you can get very similar results to what you are trying to accomplish..

Just a quick sample from an image I was working on. Took about 30 seconds... I could have exactly matched it in about 2 minutes... LOL
