i recently purchased an sb600 and i was wondering if there was a mode you could set it to and as opposed to using it as a flash you could use it as a light (like a flashlight) (sorry for my ignorance in terms of photography jargon) |

No. Speedlights only provide intense bursts of light for very short periods. Otherwise they'd overheat. |

no, but you can press the button numerous times in a row for projects like looking for night crawlers. :0

I did these with the sb 600... i had it in one hand and press the button alot of times ( on some =)

Try pushing the depth of field button on your D70 while the SB-600 is mounted. If focus assist is enabled I think it might give a 1 or 2 second burst of light from the main flash. Don't have a 600 anymore so I can't test right now.
