I don't know this lens but i do have a sigma macro lens that i am very very happy with. I find it focuses very smoothly.

I've just bought a Sigma 28-300mm f3.5-6.3 MACRO for my 300D. The build quality is impressive and the focusing is better than the standard 300D lens. My first sigma, and I would recommend it.

I was quite curious about this lens also.
I curently have the 28-105mm II USM. It is a pretty sharp lens, but for weddings I'd like the slight extra reach of the 135mm. The 2.8 also sounds good.
I hope someone has experience with it that they can share.

I would go for one that is 2.8 all the way through.

The 70-200 EX 2.8 is superb, try getting one secondhand perhaps?

Only thing it's not great for is macro shots.

I'd love a 2.8 but are there any in the range (24-135)that don't cost a fortune?

I got my Sigma 24-135 f2.8-4.5 in the mail today.
Looks very sharp fast and precise.
Took few handheld shots on the balcony and don't see any purple fringing !

If we're on the Sigma promotion wagon - just ordered myself a 28-70/2.8 EX, which will hopefully be arriving tomorrow. I'm also saving my pennies for a Sigma 100-300/2.8 EX.

you have to keep in mind that you are not going to get that wide of angle on the rebel camera. you are going to get the equivelant of 28mm x 1.6 or abot 45mm
01/23/2004 08:55:11 AM · #16
it's 24x 1.6 = 38,same as Fuji 3800 !

Yeah, I know. :-) I already have the EFS 18-55 if I'm desperate. I bought the lens specifically for close sports photography.

Little dissapointed with the lens, soft focus.
I tried 24,55 and 135 mm test shots and focus is softer than 18-55 efs lens.
AF works very fast but pbjects appear very soft!
Maybe is just a bad one ,maybe I should returned and ask for replacement!
Anyone has a good test to determine if the lens is good?

Paul

Please let us know how you like the 28-70, I am considering buying that to use with my forthcoming 10D

Thanks

I've been very pleased with it so far. It's fairly weighty, but not overly so. Excellent build and good focus. The slightly shallower DOF available is nice for close-ups.

My primary need for the lens was for sports photography, so that's where most of my experience lies:

I REALLY appreciated it for a recent Badmington shoot. They may not be great, but it was very dark, and had I only owned my 18-55/3.5-4.5 I may as well not have bothered at all. In terms of range is was spot on for that size court. I'd imagine it would be very useful for tennis and maybe basketball.

My last three DPC entries were all taken with it:

Mechanics Tools
Cup & Saucer
Time Light

I can pretty much guarantee I won't be using another lens for product shots and close-ups, unless I buy myself a macro.

I've not used it yet for any architecture sorts of shots, but I'd imagine it will work well at that sort of range too.

A friend recently pointed out to me you can move the focus ring on the lens up and down to activate full AF mode. This turns off continual-manual mode (to allow you to focus even when in AF) and seems to speed up the motors. This is well worth doing unless you're keen on fiddling with manual focus when you probably shouldn't. :-)

In terms of Sigma lenses - unless I see an incredible difference between the quality of Sigma and Canon, or warrant the use of IS, I'd be more than happy to outlay money for the 70-200 or the 100-300.

Drop me a PM if I missed anything. :-)

Thanks Paul

BTW, the badminton shots are great! A lot different than the badminton we used to play at family picnics.
