If I use a remote shutter release with a D40 in bulb mode, does it operate like 'one press to open shutter, one press to close shutter', or do I have to keep the button pressed for the duration? |

is the remote wired?
on my D70 with a wireless remote, it was one-on, one-off. i'm not sure about a tethered remote, though. |

I haven't bought it yet! :) - I've been looking at the wireless ones on eBay. There's the standard Nikon wireless remote, as well as other third-party wireless remotes.
I *suspect* that if the camera is set to 'remote' operation then bulb mode operates as 'one-on/one-off', i.e. it's a function of the camera, not the remote. |

if it is anything like my 40x (which i'm sure it is), you press the button once on the remote to open the shutter then you press it once again to close the shutter.
Hope that helps ya
Edit: here is what it says in the manual for yours.
"Optional remote control required. Select mode M, choose a shutter speed of âbulb,â and then select delayed remote or quick-response remote mode ( 33). Shutter opens when the shutter-release button on the remote control is pressed and remains open for thirty minutes or until the button is pressed a second time."
