So I had my first photoshoot mid-June but couldn't share with you guys because I used one for my freestudy. That was an outdoor shoot, but I've since acquired a home studio...so exciting! :D

I haven't run out of friends yet and I live in a large college town so finding models shouldn't be too hard. But I would love some feedback before I bring in complete strangers. Please share any comments, feedback, suggestions, tips or secrets that may help me when shooting, either outdoors or in a studio.

One silly question. I shot both sets using my burst mode. I came out with hundreds of shot (500-ish and 815), but most of them were OOF. I think I may be going about this all wrong. At first I liked the idea of hundreds of photos, but not if all but 10 or so suck. Do you guys compose a shot, focus it, then shoot it? One at a time, slowly? Any suggestions?

The problem with shooting burst mode is the moving subject. If he/she takes one step foward or backward, she has left the place you focused on. So yes, compose, focus, shoot.... maybe shoot 3 or 4 at a time, but not more.

As for the shots, I think your studio shots look a bit better than the outdoor ones, but I do like the look of the first 2 outdoors and the first 3 studio ones. The last studio shot is suffering from not enough light on the subject compared to so much light behind, you effectively put her in a shadow.

I think your next step should be to study posing. There are some awesome books out there and a good bit of info on the web too. Once you have some good poses in your pocket, these sessions will flow more easily for you.

The best advice I can give anyone who wants to learn studio shooting is shoot LOTS & LOTS!! Grab ALL of your friends, everyone at college, the guy in the 7-11 heheheheee :)

Yay! Tips from Cindi! Thanks so much for sharing your home studio pics earlier. That sorta egged me on to get my own studio. And now I have it! I've got a 16" cool light with 3 bulbs a huge reflector and 2 smaller cool lights in Home Depot clamp shells. What should my next buy be? I can't do strobes until I upgrade cameras.

Cindi - not to be a pest - but what books/sites do you recomend?

Well, my latest favorite posing book (and one that is closest to my desk atm) is Posing for Portrait Photography - A Head to Toe Guide by Jeff Smith.

The Portrait Photographer's Guide to Posing
by Bill Hurter is another good one. (I like Amherst books)

As for websites, can't say any one comes to mind as a must see. I've spent many hours googling and reading whatever I can find. The best thing, I think is to study the work of the big guys - see what works about a pose and try to emulate it. Fashion mags and clothing catalogs (like Victoria's Secret) are a great place to see good posing.

I think the studio pics look better, but I like all of the images. Id suggest, if you want to do model work, going to Model Mayhem and setting up an account. It is free and you will find tons of models for the taking to work with you. If you open one up, post your MM number here and I will be glad to add you on my friends list.

I actually set up an account a few days ago. There are a few pages of models in my area (wippie!). My MM# is 447704. I haven't done anything on MM yet, but I'm gonna start 'recruiting' soon, I think.

Here is a pdf file of poses for men and women I found a while back. I saved it and have it loaded on one of my websites. Your welcome to it and hope it helps.

I'd seen that awhile back too. Thanks for reposting, now I don't have to go find it :)
