Although I do think it would be cool if you actually got to see him transform. I'm just not sure I'd be willing to sacrfice my peppers for him.

Aweee, Jason, how can you say no to a face like this?

LOL

And if you do.... well, let's just say that Howard has friends...

Well, it's been a while since I've killed a bug in a photograph, but still, I killed about 200 ants while laying bricks around my lawn (came across a nest) and didn't think twice about it. At the same time, I tend to give bugs a chance to get out of my house before I kill them (they have to cooperate though getting on the piece of paper or whatever so I can transport them).

Well, I'm pulling for Howard, but I'm also sad for the peppers since I'm working hard at growing Serranos and don't have a single one yet (it's early). Who's sticking up for the plants?

I'm pulling for the peppers, Jason.... but Howard is really cool to watch. I've upgraded the lil Howard Studio with a nice reflector under the plants lol

Now I'm trying to see how close I can get before it scares him and he stops eating. :)

very nice images cindi, I say try and give him his own plant and hopefully you can save the others, but I have to say if it was habanero pepper plants he was eatin on, he'd have to die a quick and possibly painful death. lol My first wife told me once that when she was little her parents would pay the kids for each tomato worm they pulled off the plants, then they (the kids) would sneek back out and put the worms back for next time lol.

That's about where I stand, too.
If they'll overrun (like ants) they're gone, otherwise they're gently put out and warned that it might not be a good idea to return :)

Okay, there ARE two exceptions; craneflies and earwigs. These, I can NOT abide!

Thanks BeeCee will have to try to find a pic of the real tomato worm and upgrade my captions LOL.

Cindi Howard is looking gorgeous. I am the same with bugs, even spiders which I am terrified of. As long as they arent in my bedroom they get put outside, subjected to a modelling asignment and then let to go on their way, same goes for the snakes we find around here. I can't kill anything.

The Monarch caterpillar feeds on the milkweed plant. When I first found one of these guys I did a search on the web and found out their story, it is quite interesting. The milkweed has a dreadful bitter taste which protects the caterpillars because they take on the bitter taste when they eat the plant and the birds etc. avoid them. Unfortunatley so many people cut down the milkweed plants in the farmlands etc and because of this the Monarch is finding it harder and harder to find plants for the hatching eggs to feed on. You like macros so you would love to photograph these bugs and the flowers that grow on the milkweed plant, they are very intricate. I have a few in my portfolio, I will get their references and post them. They are flowering here in Indiana right now, but going off a bit already because it has been so dry. I havent seen any caterpillars this year yet but have seen a few butterflies.

Keep us updated on Howard's progress.

Okay here are the milkweed bugs which are on the pods that you find on these plants too.

This is a fuller view of the plant and flowers.

This is a closeup of the flower

I wish I had a better macro set up but I bet you could get some great images of these flowers.

The translucence of this photo reminds me of when I was a kid in our tomato patch. My mom used to bribe us with Slurpees to go out and pick the horned worms. It was one of those rare occassions where you get the reward before the chore. After we were finished with our Slurpees we'd go out, pluck the worms off the garden plants, and drop them in the cup. When we couldn't find any more worms we'd put the lid back on our cup and set it on a rock in the sun. After a couple days we'd go back out to throw away the cups and inside was nothing but liquid.

This is my photo of a tomato hornworm - found it on my tomoato plant last summer. They ereally, really well - they just blend in. We played a little game with this one, pulling at a leaf in his mouth. He pulled back. We went back and forth like that for a while, and evenutally let him stay. I took my tomatos ands left him the leaves.

At the time, I identified it using this site. //www.whatsthatbug.com/tomato.html
Note that it is also called a tobacco sphinx, so everyone is right.
Check the buglove section on the site. I know you guys ("guys" used generically) will love it. And might even have a contribution or two.

So how's Howard today?
07/01/2007 12:02:01 PM · #89

Howard is great, still eating like MAD!! The pepper plants are suffering a bit, but he hasn't eaten them completely yet and they're starting to put out new leaves where he's eaten the tops off of the plants. Little bugger really moves around, I think he's taken a few bites from every single pepper plant I have.

He's getting rained on just now. :P

You need a webcam on him so we can all tune in.

...and rename him to "Fat Bastard"

Oh, as soon as the rain stops I should get some macros of him with water drops on him! :D

Better idea: When the rain stops (and the sun comes out), get a magnifying glass...
