My D70 gives poor results when on auto setting is there anything I can adjust to improve this the images are too dark,I have used another camara set up taking the same shot and that's fine

Yeah, don't shoot in auto.
Aperture priority with exposure compensation or full manual would be better. Especially with lenses wider than 50mm the metering of the D70 is too much on the safe side of saving highlights.

agree don't shoot full auto ever. A mode still automates some things but gives you control over DOF at least.

Do you have bracketing on, or perhaps an EV set?

If there's no exposure compensation on, the meter might be out of adjustment. It's probably easier to just set the compensation and leave it on than to send it in, though.

I'd also say check the EV values if it's overly dark, it's simple as pressing a button next to the shutter to check it.

edit - also, don't trust the LCD if you're using the shoot/chimp/shoot/chimp method to get your lighting right, use the histogram always. I've often been bitten by all my nikons with the LCD not showing what the light really look like. If it looks slightly over-exposed on the D70/50/blah LCD, then you're probably good. Press left/right to get the histogram on the d70 in chimp-mode.
