Okay, I really want a nice point-and-shoot so I don't have to take the SLR everywhere. Preferably using cf so I don't have to buy extra cards and have enough quality to make at least 20x30's with. I've never owned anything but slr's so I am way out of the loop on what brands & features to go with.
I have a $500 Best Buy gift card to use and would be willing to throw in a little extra cash if I need to... but not too much. I played with a Canon G7 and really liked it but it dosn't look like Best Buy sells it. If there is anything on that level with recomendations it would be great.
Thanks for the help DPC!

If you read the review the G7 has some minor optical problems but all in all is a performer. I wouldnt buy it.
I love my A630 and the A640 with 10MP and tehtered shooting but its slower. The main problem with all of the 7 8 and 10 megapixel point and shoots is blown highlights and thats the only real problem with the A620/630/640. The G7 and others have their own little quirks. Plus i think the G7 is the first G to not shoot RAW.
Personally i am waiting to see the S5 review. But it might be a bit big for a pocket cam. |

Did you check Best Buy online? I know I've seen a bigger selection on line than in my local store. I think you could probably use your gift card for an online purchase, you'd have to check though. |

Wow, Best Buy has a terrible selection of higher end stuff. They don't have the A630 or 40. My selection will definatly be limited.
Has anyone heard anything on the DMC-LX2S? Good MP, IS, and a Leica lens. It looks pretty good on paper except for using SD.
Curious about the NV11 too. |

I know they dont have the A630 ot 640 lol. Besides i got myne onsale for 200 dollars at circuit city. Same price as online and god knows bestbuy would have wanted to 289 if they had had it. And for 300 at Circuit city you could get the 640.
NV11 looks nice but NV10 reviews didnt point out so well so not sure how the newer model fairs. Check out the panasonic on DPReview. Some people around here like their big zoom line.
You might try to find someone to buy that 500 dolalr gift card for 450 cut your losses and go elsewhere or even at face value if your lucky.

I just bought the G7 as a carry around camera.
IMO, the G7 is the closest thing to a Canon DSLR available without actually buying a DSLR. The A640 is similar, but lacks a hotshoe and thus severely limits the possibility of using external flash/strobes.
The Nikon P5000 also has a hotshoe, but I've heard very bad things about the AF.
All cameras, DSLR's included, have their quirks, it's how much, if at all, they impact the work you want to do. For me, the lack of RAW on the G7 is of little consequence. |

Heh yeah a hotshoe would be nice but so is the G7's 6x zoom. Id like todo some remote flash triggering and my only real option is optical slaves. Im sure it can be worked in fact canon has an accessory flash based on the same concept. So it could sorta work for me. |

I've been studying them all in the past 2 weeks. It's been between the G7 and the A640 for the best cam & divecase combo, for me. I think Im going with the A640. Other than 6-4 X optical and OIS, the rest of the stats are very sim. The A640 is much cheaper though, and the shutter is quicker. It also takes "AA" batts and neither have RAW. Hope this helps. Any opinions on my comment, let me know.

I know that doesnt help you for your BBGCard. Buy a bigger external hard drive or an extra one. Upgrade your computers hard drive, etc.. Everyone can always use more. |
