i want to get good shots of dragonflys and butterflys etc i have narrowed my options down to the sigma macros but am unsure of what lens to go for the 70mm 105mm or the big 150mm i have a 400d will they be made a bigger focal length was thinking of the 105 and also use it for portraits??? advice please am stuck :-( |

The longer the lens the more working room you have between you and the subject. The 150mm sounds pretty good. |

I use Nikon 105 f2.8. 105mm works well for me!

but would it not be better to get the 105 as the f stop goes to f45 and the other 2 lenses are about f22? this is what is confusing me a bit |

It's very rare that you would ever want to go beyond f/22, especially when shooting dragonflies and butterflies. In fact, some people argue that photos actually start to lose sharpness above f/29 or so. The Sigma 105mm is a great lens, but I wouldn't let the aperture be the primary factor in your decision.

The 70-300 you have should be pretty good at shooting butterflies and dragonflies. Typically they fly away when you get too close - anything less than 100mm you run the risk of scaring them away. And, you need less DOF when you are further away.
On another note, the Canon 100mm F2.8 is a very sharp lens and its great for other sues as well, such as portraits. |
