Someone in one of the groups I email with found out about this company on some boards he reads.. not sure if it would be of interest to anyone else. They say they're offering free web hosting for 3 years with no pop-ups, no advertisements, nothing at all. Not sure if it can be taken for truth or not.. apparently you don't even need a credit card to sign up. He couldn't find a catch and I didn't find anything that jumped out at me just yet either but I also haven't looked too hard.

I don't know much about web hosting but I've been thinking about getting some of that 'innernet' space for my very own.. may have to give this a more indepth peek.

Regardless, here's the website in case anyone else has an interest or knows more about it.

There have been a handful of unhappy campers at another site I frequent, webhostingtalk.com, who complain about 1&1's problems with getting their software to work, botched domain/email transfers, poor customer service and the like. I've been thinking about giving them a try too but I'm going to wait to see if public opinion improves after the new year. The company has promised to have all the bugs worked out by the time the offer ends. Hope they can do that so I can take advantage of the offer.

I use PAIR.com for my domains.

NEVER had a problem with me. 100% up time and fast servers. They have different plans for different folks. The thing I like most, each new domain name only costs you 1$ more to host.... but all sites on that account add up to oyur monthly usage. I have yet to exceed it though, they are generous.

I signed up, but haven't really used it to its full potential (however great or little that may be) yet. To this point, I've just used it for spare on-line storage. I played with their on-line web site builder - seems like it could have a lot of potential for a small business trying to get a quick web presence established, but right now it's pretty limited and difficult to use at this point. And like any canned site builder, you're pretty limited in what you can produce. On the other hand, they do have a lot of nice looking templates - though they have a few goofy looking ones too.

As far as the basic services, it seems OK - I've never had any trouble getting connected, FTPing, etc. I haven't set up any domain names or email accounts yet, so I can't vouch one way or the other there. My understanding is they have a lot of that automated, so you set it up yourself through their web interface - maybe that's why their customer support is weak - maybe they weren't intending to have to do much. They do register domain names for six bucks, which (I think?) is pretty cheap. They claim (or maybe I've infered) you can run server side cgi and perl (and php maybe?) scripts, but so far the only thing I've gotten to run are the canned ones they provide. They have like 5 basic CGI scripts you can turn on through the interface - guest book, feedback, visitor counters, and a couple others - just basic stuff. They also have some "advanced applications" like chat room, "live dialog" (voice, I guess), newsletter and web mail. However, when I tried installing a perl script, I couldn't get it to run. But it was a simple script I downloaded, and I don't really know what I'm doing with that, so maybe it was just me.

Some other features: Set up your own MySQL database, form generator, diagnostic tools, shell access (is that unusual?), and probably a few other things I don't even realize are there. They also give you a bunch of software - some seems like a catch, namely NetObjects Fusion (though I haven't tried using it yet), others are just your basic free stuff available all over the net - IE, Netscape, Opera, Acrobat, IrfanView, etc. Some, I don't know.

So, is it worth it? At a price of free... duh? There really are no catches or gimicks. The only sign of them asking for any money so far is for registering domain names, but it's not a requirement that you register through them. I seem to recall the price they're quoting at the moment if you keep your account after three years was something like $30 a month - unless I really got a lot invested in hosting there, that doesn't seem like it's worth it. On the other hand, if they're around and stable in 3 years, maybe it will be...

I am using 1 and 1. 500MB web space and 5GB of transfers per month fee of charge for 3 years. I have had no problems with this site. Yes it is free, no pop-ups etc. Even junk mail doesn't seem to have increased. I'd recommend it. What do you have to lose. Not sure if the deal is still on.

Not a single problem with them either although I am doing only basic stuff.

I switched my small business domain to 1 and 1 and so far no problems. The page maker was a bit of a problem figuring out at first and it's limited but you can make and upload your own pages as well. I figured it was worth it since Yahoo was hosting my site before and it was costing me almost $20 a month for less space, less transfer and much less customer service.

Well, I think I just found the host for my personal site. Thanks for the info

I have my own site working on 1and1, using PHPnuke and gallery. Their SQL backend worked fine, as did domain registration and the whole process has been without problems. Haven't tried their tech support and it is probably as crappy as everyone elses, but my experience has been all positive so far, as long as you are happy doing the work yourself.

Don't know how their 'wizards' and stuff work either.

i just had to chime in and say it's been nothing but awesome with 1and1 from the start. how can you pass up this deal if you're looking for a new domain / domain host?

I'm trying to sign up, but they don't seem to want to accept my address. When I enter my info and click next, it keeps changing to another address. Somewhere close, but it's not mine.

Do they actually send you anything by mail?

Edit: got it to work using my work address.

The fine print talks about account setup fees. Anybody can tell me what those are?

I think the further fine print in the special offer says that the set-up fees are waived.

I'm using it for storage and testing right now, but I have 4-5 small sites I manange I'll probably migrate over there. The simple stuff (FTP, control panel) seem to work OK for me so far.

I made one call to the tech support and I did not have to wait online very long. They were very polite, but the techie seemed to lack a certain technical knowledge on what would work with their site servers and what would not. If he had any doubts he simply said try to install it and see what happens.

If you download the Wise FTP it is linked with 1and1.com and all you have to do is give it your url and it will go out and download all the needed FTP settings for you, real nice if you are not a big techie.

The other site features from what I have seen are simple but they work nice, i.e. webstite stats for page views, most popular and etc.

Their website designer is very basic and if you want more features you have to upgrade to the Plus package at $9.99 a month I think it was. But most won't need this feature.

So far my experience with 1and1.com has been a pleasant one.

I use it as a free on-line hosting. Have not even given them a credit card number (which is rare.) Site has been up anytime I have looked and I can FTP pictures/graphics to my little heart's content. Have not tried their other features although someday I might.

I know that they give a great deal, but I don't feel very private because they require your phone number to send you a pin number.

Also I'm sure the service has probably slowed down a ton because of all of the people registering there.

I think I'm just going to keep doing what I have been doing for now.

They require your phone number to guarantee that yuo are not going to sign multiple times I think.

I did not notice specifically a drop in performance since I started few months ago
