Everything I have ever read on the topic has said: 1.4x good, 2x bad (quality suffers). I would love to see some good examples. A web site with test shots using a 70-200 2.8 and comparing the 1.4x to the 2x would be great. The reduced light issue isn't important here - just final quality.

But I would love to see any shots taken with any extender... let me know what the lens combo was.

And thanks in advance for playing (if play you do).

All shot with 300mm F4 L IS with a 1.4x

I'm sure I have shots somewhere taken with 70-200 and combo of both extenders. I'll have to look around.

I used my 70-200 f2.8 with 2x teleconverter for these 100% cropped images - all at f7.2-10. Converted from RAW using RSP (no sharpening).

I used three stacked 2x converters for this 1600mm (200mm x2, x2, x2) shot - Resized, autolevels (it was v grey otherwise) and sharpened. The main thing I notice is how much dirt shows from the stacked teleconverters!!

Excellent - just the sort of stuff I was hoping to see. Thank you Dave and Matthew. There is no doubt that the 1.4 on a good prime is transparent. I am especially interested in seeing the extenders on the good zoom lenses. And let's also see some of the non-canon extenders (if anyone has examples).

The biggest negative ive seen with TCs is an increase in chromatic abberation... but if youre starting with a good 2.8 lens, that problem should be minimal anyways.

Check out

This guy has a great website ... full of valuable reviews and info. Check out his comparison of the 1.4x and the 2.0x.
