Hi I just joined! I am in the market for my first dig cam and have some question that I hope someone can help with.
I have a Nikon N65 35mm SLR that I use for sporting events and hiking trips at home in British Columbia, but I want to get a digi cam that I can use for candids and fun shots.
I am looking in the 300-350 dollar range. I am looking at the Fuji FinePix S5000 and Minolta Dimage Z1. Both have 10x optical zoon and 2.2 and 4x digital zoom.
I was wondering if one of these has a clear advantage over the other and if there is another camera in this price range that is better?
Thank you for any help.

Welcome, Joe!
For comments on a recent thread about a competitor, click here: C-750
Once there, see the comments people are making and counter-recommendations. Also, check the review pages I listed in that thread.
Good luck, and welcome.

Welcome thrower. Of those two I'd reccommend the DiMage, but consider the Oly 750z too. Don't worry about digital zoom in making your decision. With 10x you won't need it, and it lowers image quality noticably. If you like zoom power and can stretch your budget, take a look at the Panasonic DMC-FZ10. Image Stabilization makes the long zoom a lot more useful. You'll enjoy any of these, they are all fine cameras. I think you'll like digital's advantages over film.

Hi Joe. I was actually comparing the same two cameras before I bought my Dimage Z1. After reading the reviews on //www.dpreview.com as justine mentioned and also a very good and indepth review at //www.steves-digicams.com, I decided on the Z1. I've had it about a month now and am very happy with it. I'm still getting the hang of it, but if you have any questions about it, feel free to PM me and I'll do my best to answer them.
And like coolhar said, don't work about the "digital" zoom. First thing I did was made sure mine was disabled. :)

Don't forget to just get a hold of one. If it is not comfortable in your hand, you won't like it |

Thanks for the feedback everyone. It is very helpful. I was in the store yesterday and looked at the Fuji S5000 and the Olympus 740. I like them both to say the least. Feel for both was also good.
My girlfriend just got the Olympus D-565 4.0 MP. We used it this weekend and the pictures turned out excellent. I was very impressed. Can I expect the same quality of photos from the Fuji or Olympus 740 even though they are 3.1 and 3.3 Mp respectivly?
Thanks again for the help. |
