Hi

My nephew just purchased one of these (assuming this is the image stabilised model):

//www.dpchallenge.com/lens.php?LENS_ID=242

I am used to Canon lens and have the Canon equivalent of this one (the 100-400 L USM IS).

With my Canon the focussing is virtually silent, due to their ultrasonic focussing I would think. (nd no this is NOT a Canon vs Nikon thread).

However, this new lens makes quite a lot of noise when focussing. The lens feels sturdy, well built, and the optics seem great. However, my nephew was disappointed about the noise it makes. He is used to Sigma lenses and was excited about getting an image stabilised Nikon lens, but this noise has him a little worried.

Is this normal for these, or other Nikon, lenses?

The noise does not sound wrong (i.e. nothing is grating) but it is not the near silent lens focusing he was expecting.

So, normal or not?

Not sure about the overall amount of motor noise, but the 80-400 is not an AF-S lens, so its bound to be a bit slow in focusing. More to the point, I dont believe it is equipped with Nikon's SWM (silent wave motor) so its not really made to be ultra quiet. By comparison, my 70-200 VR is really quiet, but that is probably the SWM working. On the 70-200 you can hear the VR adjusting more than you can hear the focus motor. So I dont think this is a Nikkor issue as much as it is one of the lens type.

The 80-400 is supposed to be a very good lens for general photography. Although its f/stop range is a bit higher than I personally like, I wouldn't mind having that huge focal length range.

Also, for what its worth, the Sigma lenses that I used in the past were much noiser, and generally the overall lens quality was much worse as well.

I had rented the 80-400 VR for the St. Augustine GTG and was very happy with the quality of the lens but yes, it is very noisy. I have rented the 70-200 VR and was expecting the same quietness with the 80-400.

Overall, however, I was very pleased with the lens and will rent it again.

Thanks guys.

That was what we thought .... that it is a great lens, but noisy when it comes to focus.

At least we know there is nothing actually wrong with the lens (we didn't think there was, but good to double check).

:)
