| Hey guys I need to find a good portable strobe kit. I want to start doing location portraits. And most of them will be away from a power source. Any ideas on a low cost kit that I could take on the road. I was thinking $1000 to $1500. Thanks for the help. |

You might want to look at STROBIST. It is amazing how much can done with portable flash units. I would have no problem doing location portraits with this type of setup.

How portable do you need to get? How much power do you need? How much battery capacity? Do you have a preference with modifier mounts?
If budget is a concern, don't be afraid to consider used equipment.

I joined strobist and ended up buying a couple of old Nikon SB flashes on Ebay and some cheap radio triggers. The set up cost me a little over £100 ($200 USD) and is GREAT for small shoots. Probably not enough power to do big groups, but plenty for portrait work.
This was taken with them on half power, not the best example but will give you an idea...

Aren't they great? It's amazing what a little setup can do.
This was taken with a pair of SB-600's.

There are a number of flashes you can get for under $100. But, I spent a bit more and got a 580EX and a 430EX. They are great flashes and I have the option of using Canon's E-TTL metering system if things are moving too quick for my brain to keep up with manual adjustments. When using off camera in manual mode I just use a sync cord for the main light and I slave the second with a little $19 shoe attached trigger. I'm also still debating between a ST-E2 trigger from canon or spending the money on pocket wizards (ouch), but that won't make the images any better so it can wait.
