What I like about DPC is that it encourages me to take photos I wouldn't have come up on my own. And it teaches me to take a closer look, by the comments and also by looking at the work of others during voting. So I'm quite positive the scores will improve over time, and if not - so what, I learn anyway and I still have the fun.

I don't want to start competing for the lowest average or anything, so maybe we don't need to single out people with lowest averages. I'll edit the first post for a members/supporters list.

Hey, I need a ruling on scoring, because I'm having a momentary lack of sucknes in the Grain challenge.
What can I do to stick around without purposely torpedoing myself?
I get a fluke every now and then.......8>)

My average vote recieved is between 4&5 but I know that is about right for my pics....although, my time is doing rather well. I am mostly happy with my entries...except one.......A HUGE STUPID MISTAKE......but oh well. Yes, who wouldn't like higher scores, but I get what I deserve!
So I guess I can't complain, I just wanted to add in here, I'm bored, I should be out shooting......good luck to each and every one of us! |

As a supporter of the au5 gang (and Kelly, dear, add me to the list, please!), I'd like to offer my support. I can't help you become Larus (and you probably don't want to become Larus because it means you'd have to move to Iceland), but I might be able to offer comments and critiques, or maybe help you discover a tool or two in post processing (though I kinda stick to very basic post processing). And in chatting with  timfythetoo (who graciously puts up with my whining on a regular basis), he offered to help with Photoshopping hints. He's pretty good at that stuff, by the way.
So if you want comments or critiques on shots you've had in challenges or have in your portfolio, post a request here and I'll see what I can do. If you want Tim's help with PS, post a request here, too.
And there's always the after-challenge offers of drachoo and stdavidson to provide critiques - those are focused on helping you score better at DPC which may or may not be a goal you want to chase*. The critiques are helpful and worth the read even if you don't submit a photo for critique.
None of this is intended to encourage anyone to change their styles or their personal goals! Just ideas to encourage learning. :-)
*Caveat - getting great scores is a cool thing, but not an end-all goal, I don't think. Just my personal opinion! |

I can't be part of the club because my average finally climbed above 5 recently. Where were you guys before, when I was weekly getting sick over feeling like I had the lowest average on the entire dp? Anyway, I stuck with it and have finally gotten a bit better, but there isn't much separating me from dipping below a 5 again. I wish I could be part of something, though. I feel kind of alone, if you know what I mean.
I'll be visiting you in the under 5 club frequently, just to see if I can add anything constructive, or just to give you words to boost your spirit for the week. Oh, yeh, maybe you can visit me as well because I still score many images below 5, even after two years of struggle to get it over 5. |

| Good for you for sticking with it. It can be tough sometimes but can be so worth it. You are part of us and not alone! We would love constructive or spirit-boosting things :-) And what I talked about in the original post about being okay with things but wanting to improve, that is the important stuff here, and what we want to do. |

Ya know, part of the reason that Team Suck got going in the first place was to help and support each other as photographers with skill and passion that do not necessarily strive to conform or solely for the score when they are mostly trying to capture, communicate, and share, their view of life and the world around them.
So no, nobody "deserves" to not have their views understood and appreciated by a three second dismissal of a voter who didn't take the time or have the whole story behind your work.
That's why the side tournaments, challenges, projects, and groups such as these have sprung up.
You will be challenged to do better by competing, but do not think that lower scores than folks who have been here for years is any judge of them as people or photographers in the real world, either.
I am a part time professional photographer who seels his work locally and even though I'm no larus, Gringo, or jdannels, they weren't always what they are today, and these fine photographers will take the time and effort to share what they can to help, as they have with me which in turn helped me to decide to pursue this passion to the next level.
So I'm a happy and proud member of Team Suck and au5, and I get what I "deserve" in the form of respect and support when I'm NOT being hammered by the voters.
And before you know it, you'll be watching your scores on that shot you got that you knew was spectacular when you got it climbing steadily towards a 7 and get to spend all week going WOO-HOO to yourself regardless of where it ends up.
Besides, you *really* find out what you "deserve" the first time you realize that someone is willing to pay for a little part of you when they want a photograph that's a part of you, to make their life a little more beautiful.
I have yet to run into anything in life that compares to that feeling.

1) What you wanted to achieve
2) What reaction you hoped for in the viewer
3) What challenges you faced taking it, which you overcame, and how

One of the things that gives me the most trouble when I gather up shots for a show or sale is that I can never tell what others will think of my work and whether they will fall in love with the subject in the same manner as I did.
My ribbon on that old truck really surprised me because though that picture meant a lot to me for a number of reasons, none of those reasons would be remotely relevant to anyone else.
First, it's a "Deuce" truck.....as in "Little Deuce Coupe" only the truck version. I've always liked that era of trucks and the '32 Ford is the most beautiful of them all to me.
Second, it is a perfect example of the kind of lost cause I would constantly drag home and completely restore. I was never happy buying a perfectly good used car, I always had to buy some POS and breathe life back into it above and beyond any sensible manner. I restored waaaaaaay too many cars that sould not have been saved.
Third.....this one is the one that helped me realize that the chapter in my life where I "had" to drag another home is over. I have neither the time nor the inclination to drag it home and tie up all my spare time and money in it for the next couple years 'til I get it the way I want it.
I like it better on my wall in a picture frame!
So.....for the life of me, I can't understand why anyone outside the narrow spectrum of antique and classic automobile restorers would see the beauty in this nasty old truck!
It's really, really hopeless!
Go figure!

Well....I've just entered a shot in Color Portrait that should be resoundingly thrashed.
I like it, but I'll probably get publically horsewhipped by the DNMC Police that feel that I don't meet the "Spirit" of the challenge.
It should indicate my inclination to be a lifetime member of this club!
You never know though, maybe some people will "Get it".
