Well, the subject is not so much cliche as the way you shoot the subject.

And even a cliche shot that is very nice is still a nice photo.

The semi nude this week. Now if that kind of photography is not cliche I can't think of a single subject that is. Even the title is cliche (how many untitled, semi nude, black and white photographs with that same pose have been taken in the last century? 10's of thousands probably) But it is a beautiful shot.

Obviously the subject is extra nice but the pose, the shadows and the simplicity of it all works and always works. You can take a shot similar to that a milllion times but it will always be a nice shot.

Cliche yes..but never dull to me (honey, quit kicking me!!) :-)

I loved that shot this week. Well done by any standard. But part of the reason it carried extra impact I think was cuz stuff (subjects) like that are so rare amongst these parts. If we had lots of those, it wouldn't stand out as much, imo.

(I was going to shoot a fine cigar between a pair of cleavage for advertisement last week, but it just didn't happen, lol).

i've suggested a fashion/portrait photography challenge, and also a candids of strangers to challenge - to sort of counteract what I see as a overly heavy focus on "things", and "places" (family and pets fall into the category of "things", hehe).

I'm hoping they're still in the pipeline for consideration :)

the word "cliche" implies a subject that is trite and superficial (two words taken right from the dictionary definition). i think most photography that is deemed cliched is so often used due to it being exactly NOT trite or superficial. subjects are overused because the sames things continue to evoke emotion and feeling in photographers again and again. i think this is a subtle distinction that most fail to realize.

paully that woul dbe an awesome picture. i think that 5 aces touch takes it out of the realm of cliche, don't you? and the lighting and angle and arrangement could really make the extra diff.

Ah but if it's not on the cliche list then _loads_ of people will shoot it! Mine is on the list so I can guarantee nobody else will pick it (what happened to all those pictures of bats that people talked about?).

I took such a great shot last night that fits this challenge. Unfortunately it is SO cliche, that I doubt I will enter it.

Bats are hard to photograph. Even if you had found some, I can just imagine the comments you'd get. "Too bad they aren't looking at you" "I don't really like their color" "It's a shame that the cave wall is so dark. Perhaps you could have caught them on a better background" "Couldn't you have gotten a different angle? Like from above or something?"
I think the comments are really interesting in that so many of them are impossible suggestions or just really silly based on the circumstances of the shot.

Yes, in my very, very limited experience of bats, there appear to be 2 kinds. Small and featureless (mostly wrapped up in their wings so there aren't many interesting details) and big and ugly. You could make a really nice tonal composition of the different shades and textures but I reckon it would just look black.

Oh yes, and if you're foolish enough to use flash and you're in the UK then you could probably get arrested. Bats are s-o-o-o-o protected!

hey, that's wildlife photography for you. it's not easy. that's why those nat. geographic types get the big bucks and fame : ).

when i was in grad school, though, I knew some bat researchers. they would stay up all night setting up and monitoring nets, and/or taking high speed bat pictures. they got some coool stuff.

unfortunately i don't know them anymore.

also, i am told that in rural malaysia, bats are a staple, and one can go to the market and purchase them for food. i wonder if it's like 'not very hungry, ill have the little bat', 'its thanksgiving, i need a huge turkey sized bat','i'm a vegetarian, got any fruit bats?'

Someone said it is a Southern Tradition! Well since you know what it is, would you or someone else explain to an ignorant (in that case me) what is it?[/i]

Actually I believe it started in the midwest.... here is a link that explains it. //www.digitalo.com/vrml/cowtip.html[/i]

actually, i always thought it started up here in the north east..since theres soo many cows.

I wasn't trying to say it started here. I'm just saying it was something that a lot here did growing up. Teenagers get drunk and either swim in a strangers pool @ 2am until they see lights come on and run, or they go tip cows.

hey hokie!

I just saw on the Discovery channel that the fruit bat is a distant relative of the gummi bear!! who knew?!?!

They're whispering, "Lay off the drugs or you'll start submitting pics of your armpit..."

Not sure about anyone else, but I think this challenge will produce some great photos. Can't wait to see them!
05/19/2002 05:34:42 PM · #44
less than 2.5hrs and only 89 submissions?
05/19/2002 07:50:04 PM · #45
I'm almost amazed that there's been so many submissions today. The number was like high 50s this morning when I woke up.

wow, I am very impressed with the quality of the shots in this challenge. probably a result of the accessibility of the subject. this and the curves challenge are so far my favorite 2

I'm surprised how many board games and how few action/sport shots there are. Expected it to be the reverse.

Objects, especially those under your immediate control are comfortable subjects.

Sports means people in uncontrollable environments (lighting, distance, speed of shot, angles , blah, blah). That usually means you have to take a photo on the terms GIVEN to you versus STAGING the photo yourself.

I know from personal experience. I love people photos but I am rarely satisfied in the outcome. I am a control freak :-)

Thats why I lookd forward to this weeks challenge, People. I am making it my mission to get a shot of someone I do not know or have control over. :-) (just hope I don't get arrested)

I expect to see a lot of set-up shots in static poses and very few natural grabs or action. They just are more accessable, especially to new photographers.

I submitted my photo around 11:30 PM last night just before the cut off.

This entire weekend was occupied by recording my band's stuff. I think we did 25+ hours just on the weekend. I'm ready to kill all musicians :)

I took about 30 shots yesterday and the one that I initially thought was an outtake was the one that I submitted. I was pretty pleased with it when I took it off the camera and viewed it on the PC. It also didnt need any retouching or cropping. I know this one will do much better than my first shot which nobody got.

Eddy...I got your last photo :-) and rated it pretty high.

Where I think you lost out was that the water drop was too small to allow folks to see the upside down element.

Do you have a macro ability on your camera?

Those types of shots are very hard unless you have a high quality macro..meaning you can get in about on top of the drop.
