It's frustrating believing that you have a better than average picture in the current challenge but check the site frequently only to see that you're getting average votes at best. I would say that most of the votes I give are between 6 and 9 with only an infrequent 3 or 4. I think most people use an impossibly high standard by which they decide to vote.

By no means am I a great photographer, far from it in fact. But an average score of 5 can be disheartening.

I've come to realize that 5 is not average here. 3 is infact average and 5+ is outstanding. Or that's what I keep telling myself.....

don't worry about it - many of the top photographers on the site (as in, the ones marked as favorites the most often) are typically only in the low 6 range (6-6.5 or so). you'd expect the best to be up in the 8/9 range, but photography is rather subjective.. a 10 to many people can be a 1, 2 or 3 to another.

The average votes you give is a bit lower than what you've received and even below 5 so maybe you're not voting as high as you thought?

It IS disheartening though...I agree. I got all excited last evening with my photo. Haven't entered one for a long time and I predicted in another fun thread on here that my final score would be 5 with maybe 5 comments.

Well, a couple more decimal points and it will be right where I predicted except that there's only 2 comments! LOL I even had a high of 6.3 at one point but now, it is nearly where I predicted...steadily down.

It's a popular vote, largely influenced by what they 'like' or have been conditioned to 'like'. As such, scores and voting may be regarded as past-time by those with an engaged artistic stance toward photography.

A 5, to me, goes to a photo I'm prepared to study a little. Not a bad attribute, in my book.

You say you give mostly votes between 6 and 9 (with a few 3 and 4), however your average vote cast is 4.6608. Whassup with dat?

You know, I don't know what's up with my average vote of 4.6. Maybe I'm not as generous a voter as I originally believed. The numbers don't lie. I sure FEEL like I give out a lot of 7's and 8's...hmmmmmmmmm.

Consider me repentant. From now on everyone gets a 9!

handing out votes between 6 and 9 as an average is quite generous. i don't think that many photos fit an 8,9 or 10. only a select few and thats what makes them stand out from the rest. sorry about your pic, but those are the breaks.
