I've shopped for the 300d and later this week will be purchasing... have a couple questions first:
I found the Canon 75-300 lens for $229 or a Sigma two lens kit which has the 20-90 and 70-300 for $229.
I found Quantaray filters (polarizer $32 and UV $15) buy 2 get 1 free
I haven't found any CF cards that specifically say high speed on them, so is it ok to get regular CF cards?
Thanks in advance for any help! :-) |

You will thank yourself later to buy fast CF card(s) and a reader that will support fast transfers to the pooter(USB 2.0 compliant). The Sandisk Ultra II cards are among the best, you can find these at various online and brick & mortar stores.
You want at the very least 256M, two of these would be better. I think better two 256s than one 512, then all your eggs are not in one basket.

Thanks for the advice on the CF cards kirbic - I think I will look for the high speed cards then. I had planned to start with two 256's and will probably add the 512 later.

You may not need a card reader. I boughf a firewire reader, which I love, but when I opened up the box for my card found it had a USB 2 reader thrown in for free with the card. I do prefer the firewaire, as it is also a writer, but probably would not have bothered with it.
I agree entirely with Kirbic re "better 2 256s than one 512". I have a single 1Mb and wish I had bought 2x 512 or 4x 256. Eventually my card will have had enough, x zillion writes or whatever, and at that point I lose the lot.

Be very careful of cheap polarizer filters. I bought a sunpack one for my Nikon 70-300 ED lens and couldn't focus at infinity. I was about to send the lens in to be repaird, when I was told to take the filter off...sharp picture...when I put a Nikon filter or any other good filter (B+W) on it, the pictures were sharp. In that respect you really get what you pay for |

One other thing about the high speed cards. Lexar makes a very good 40X WA (write accelerated) card, but I don't think at this tie, your Canon supports that technlogy. There will probably be a firmware upgrade in the near future that will, so it isn't a bad idea to think about that card. Also I would go with the canon lens. I work at a camera store, so I see this stuff everyday. |

I'll probably just get whatever card reader they have at whichever store I make my purchase, found one today for $10 - I'm not as worried about that since the cam does come with the USB cable to hook up to the computer. The card reader is just easier to manage.
For the filters - I assume then that Quantaray isn't a great brand? I've never looked into purchasing these before - so I'm not sure what brands to get. Are UV filters pretty standard regardless of the brand? So far, every type I've seen has been about $15...
Thanks Natator and Shelley! :-)

I think you can get away with a less expensive UV, because basically it is clear glass, but again don't get the cheapest around. Remember that you have good glass on your lens, and why would you want to put bad glass over that. |

I have exactly that Lexar card and it is sensational. It certainly works with the 10D, and I thought the 300D was similar, but that is just an assumption on my part and Shelley is more likely to be right. If the 300D does take that card then I could not reccomend it highly enough.

I've always had good luck with regular, single-coated Hoya filters, both UV and polarizing. I'm sure they aren't the quality of B+W, Schneider and other filters that cost a zillion dollars, but they certainly seem to work well enough.

Thanks everyone! Together with everyone's help, I've decided on my accessories. Sometime this week I'll be getting the 300d with the 18-55 lens, a Canon 75-300 lens, Hoya polarizing filter and a Canon UV filter plus a Lexar high speed CF card.
I appreciate all the help very much!! :-)

I have a 10D and bought a usb 2 card reader. This has been an excellent purchase which takes away the hassle of uploading to a pc. I also went for a microdrive which I have found quick and reliable. I think after spending that much on a camera you should not skimp on filters. I was surprised how much difference there was between the cheaper filters and B&W for instance. As you have a digital it is no problem to ask to try before you buy and have a look to see if the cheaper filters are up to the job. I found them to be a false economy as I replaced them when I got better lenses. The loss of contrast was noticible even with just a UV filter. I hope you enjoy your new purchase as much as I enjoy my 10D. |

VÃÃÃ
I made my buy earlier this evening.
300D, Canon 28-135 IS lense + hood, 1GB SanDisc CF card, extra battery and a remote controll just for kicks :)
Just wanted to share with you that after a week of browsing, the cheapest package I found was at Adorama.com
That´s all...

You'll definatly use the remote a lot I think Finnur, I use my cable release all the time on the 10D.
Not sure how good the battery is on the 300D. If it is anything like on the 10D you'll probably not need the second battery a lot. Mine seems to last for ever and then recharges from empty in only 90 mins anyway. They say you get something like 650 pics on a battery charge. I'm not sure it would be quite that high, but it is certainly up there somewhere.

Thanks so much Wookie... I'm sure I'll really enjoy this cam and accessories. My Sony is great, but I'd like to move on. I've never used accessories with the Sony... so I'm really looking forward to using different lenses and filters, etc. This should be a great experience. You made some great points about the card reader as well.
Thanks finnur for the tip on that web site. Congrats on your purchase! I decided to go with getting the accessories on b&h photo and I'm buying the cam locally.
I forgot about the remote though! Guess that goes on my wish list... :-)

Congrats on your purchase. Since you didn't yet buy a card reader, I thought I'd point out that if you have a notebook with PC Card slots, a PC card based reader is about $10, more portable than any of the other readers, and just as good. They are basically the size of a credit card (a little thicker), and have no real electronics, since CF cards are really the same electronic standard as PC Card, except that the pins and size are different.
