Not all of us are out to shoot EVERYTHING and can spend plenty of time here :-)
Me thinks Skip is a bit tooo motivated. LOL
Pro here... by the definition of the OP at least Photography is what I do for a living Doesn't necessarily mean that I'm good :-)

If a pro is someone who makes money at photography then there are lots of "pros" on here.
If a pro is someone who makes all their money with photography then there are a few on here. |

To answer the original question, I'M a pro, assuming a retired pro counts. I earned my living as an architectural and sometime editorial photographer.

And someone who spends all their money on photography... anti-pro? :-)

I think you need to define "living" for some of the folks on here.
I have 2 jobs currently my main job that I have done for 17 years and I work for a weekly newspaper doing freelance/assignment work. So I do earn money doing it, but I make my living(ie pay my bills and support my family) doing something else. I actually have a 3rd job but am currently cutting back on it because 3 is just too much right now.

I'm 100% amateur, and proud of it :)
With "amateur" I mean: "A person who engages in a study, sport, or other activity for pleasure rather than for financial benefit or professional reasons." |

Me too. Professional photographer would be the last thing I'd want to be. I'd have to find a new hobby then, take up golf again or something.
WORD HISTORY When Mrs. T.W. Atkinson remarked in her 1863 Recollections of the Tartar Steppes and their Inhabitants, âI am no amateur of these melons,â she used amateur in a sense unfamiliar to us. That sense, âa lover, an admirer,â is, however, clearly descended from the senses of the word's ultimate Latin source, amātor, âlover, devoted friend, devotee, enthusiastic pursuer of an objective,â and from its Latin-derived French source, amateur, with a similar range of meanings. First recorded in English in 1784 with the sense in which Mrs. Atkinson used it, amateur is found in 1786 with a meaning more familiar to us, âa person who engages in an art, for example, as a pastime rather than as a profession,â a sense that had already developed in French. Given the limitations of doing something as an amateur, it is not surprising that the word is soon after recorded in the disparaging sense we still use to refer to someone who lacks professional skill or ease in performance.

Who among us doesn't shed a little tear when we read Mrs A's convoluted prose? We'll never see her like again! My question, they grew/grow melons on the steppes? |

I am not a pro yet, but am hoping to be in the near future. Just starting to build up my portfolio, so that I have something decent to begin with.
