Going by memory.

PS

copy your bg layer.

take your favorite tool and outline just the face, and other parts you want selected.

push the layer mask selection at bottom of layer pallet.

go to selection drop down menue.

go to feather.

feather around 20 to 25%.

go into image/levels or curves

adjust the level of the image to your liking.

flatten.

save.

Copied the background layer, set it to overlay and then added a curves adjustment layer.

I used Paintshop Pro to do the edits on this, but I followed basically the same steps American Horse outlined for you.

Image/adjustments/shadowhighlights

This was a quick 3 second adjustment in the auto setting. Play with it to get exactly what you want.

CS2 shadow/highlight, then select BG and cut it and paste it as a new layer, then use it in multiply mode to smooth out the black. That wasn't necessary, if you like the ceiling paraphernalia.

Lighten the face... but leave the grain... some of the edits smoothed around the form which makes the face look really odd. I would actuall ADD grain around the form.

Can you give the face area a hit with the Dodge tool set to a large brush?

I had a go at your photo and Dodge worked well. I think I successfully posted my go at your photo...I gave the face area 2 clicks of the Dodge tool and that's all I did.
