Wow, good stuff here.
Magnetic, I think you are really nailing it on the head. One of the great things about this site IS it's diversity, which I hope continues to grow and evlolve. Frankly, I'd love to see more participants from elsewhere in the world, outisde of our anglo-western culture. But definitely having a wdie array of opinions and perspectives is what makes this site unique and intersting.
Basically, dont sweat the ones, dont gloat over the 10's, enjoy the experience and take what you can from it.
On a sidenote regarding "enjoying the experience", hokie you mentioned how the DP Review Canon forum has just exploded. I Can't even really keep up with it any more, there is so much activity. Right now DPC is still small and cozy enought to where we can all easily follow the threads in the forums and keep up with whats going on. Imageine a year from now when the subscriber base has grown from 1,000 to 10,000. Not only will the forums be busy, we too shall be busy rating and commenting on 400-500 submission/week. All in all, things right now here at DPC are really good.

Personally, I think that it just goes back, to something that was stated earlier........ Some people don't get it, Some really don't care, some may be Jealous, and some are just plain ol' A-holes. However, it's all in fun and hopefully educational for some, I know i'm learning a few new things............. |

well, i just feel bad that some people feel so bad, when there's nothing about it to take personally. It's just *the way things are*, and the diversity of the world is great.
Whenever I lose sight of this, I think of some music that I really really like, that most people can't stand. Like for example, the NYC band Sonic Youth. Total cult following. Total critical darlings. But to probably the vast majority of people their dissonant oddly tuned music would be scored a '1'. :P
At the same time, although I admire the spirit, I think cajun zydeco music is pretty boring. but i know a lot of people like it. if i had to score a limp bizkit band vs. a zydeco band, i'd prolly rate the bizkit band higher. but again, that's just Me. : ) Should that mean that people shouldnt enjoy their zydeco? (well of course it does: as you may or may not know, I am the Ruler of the Universe :P). But all kidding side, of course not!
oh well, ill stop belaboring my points (my mamma always said i should be a lawyer - I do so love to argue :) .. maybe i can actually get some work done now for a change !

Well said, Magnetic. I often find myself wondering why people give out 1's on particular photos. Are they trying to be mean or are they serious? I just get curious about it but it doesn't really bother me at all. I think the mix of talent and ideas on this site is good. It makes for good variety and lots of discussion. In my opinion it is primarily the mainstream ideas which are technically excellent that rise to the top and some of the more creative and different images are in the middle to bottom. I think the average person votes according to what they like and are used to. I've been finding myself entering photos that I'm certain will not win because they are pretty different or they are using techniques that I want to work on but need some help technically but I want to see what people think. And I figure, who knows, maybe they could score high. I can't know until I enter. I'm just glad to be in the game each week. I've been finding myself working harder and harder on my pictures and trying to get them as close to the way I want them to right out of the camera, almost (and maybe well into) the point of obsession. I havn't been quite this anal or obsessed about perfection in my art since I was younger and made a lot of pencil drawings. It's like this site has given me that spark again. I love this aspect of the challenge, knowing that I can't spot edit. I think it will eventually make me a much better photographer and help me become faster at it. Less editing equals more time saved. Ok, I'm done now.
