Does anybody out there use a dell laptop for photo shop work. I was thinking about their XPS system because I thought that it would have all the power to run any photo editing programs. If you have one how do you, like the screen?

I use a D600 sometimes but I just find the screen too harsh. This is a pretty old machine in the scheme of things, so maybe they have improved. It does have 2Gb of memory, which help PS pigs :-)

I use mine exclusivly. I have an Inspiron 1150, 2.8Ghz, 1GB RAM. I don't think they make the same model anymore, but something comparable would be good. I have no serious complaints about mine - as a laptop, it does the job well. Granted, it could be faster and have a bigger screen, but then it'd be less useful as a portable system.
That said, I'm working up to selling it in favor of a desktop system, just for the extra kick-in-the-pants power and speed you can get, as well as a pair of big monitors. Then I'll get a very small laptop with lower power just to travel with.
I guess the moral of this is: if you want solid power and aren't concerned with portability, a big laptop or a desktop aren't much different. But if you're trying to balance portability with power, like me, then choose carefully, and be ready to compromise.
And just to throw out here, I've heard a lot of shit about how Dell laptops aren't any good, break all the time, etc. Mine has never had any issues at all, going on 3 years (knock on wood!), and I can say that the people I know at school who have had trouble, it's been their own fault for not taking care of their equipment (read: dropped, bashed, hot chocolate spilled on).

Dunno - Mine is 2 years old and has had a gentle life (always in padded bag for transport and 75% of it's life is in a docking station - never been dropped or hit) and has gone thru 2 hard drives and on the second screen (so far). It's a work machine and 90% of my critical docs are on the network, so the lost drives are just a pain rather than fatal (Most of the s/ware is reloaded for me) - I would not be real happy if I owned this one. The area I work in about a third have lost a drive and all of them newer then mine.

Interesting. I cannot really speak for the business crowd, I suppose. But at least among the university crowd, abuse seems to be the cause of premature computer damage and death. On the other hand, perhaps they are just destroying them before they have a chance to fail on their own ;-)
