I'm getting married next November in Banff, Canada (side note: white wedding dress against snowy background - going to be fun...) and I'm starting to think about the photographer. My problem is a common one - I want the digital negatives rather than ordering all of my prints from the photographer. For one thing, if I think to myself, I wonder if I'd like that photo better in B&W I'd like to be able to just do it. For another thing, I use the digital files a lot in screen savers and digital photo frames - I rarely print any of my photos anymore.

Do any wedding photographers/recent wedding participants have any suggestions for convincing the photographer to give me the negatives?

Some will do it, some won't. Shop around for a photog that will give you what you want.

There's not that much selection (very small town), so I'm looking for suggestions if I have to bargain with them.

Offer them a lot of money.

Seriously, a lot of photographers price their wedding packages so that they basically break even shooting and their profit is in the albums/prints. So, to just hand over the files to you means giving up all of their profit.

Also, it gives them creative control over what images are associated with their name. Let's say someone takes an image from your wedding and makes it look like crap in Photoshop. Then someone who's looking for a wedding photg sees it and asks who did it. When they hear the name, they immediately cross that guy off the list.

Even if they were to give you a disk with the files on it, the copyright remains with the photographer and you would need a release to get them printed. At least here in the US that's the way it is.

What you're asking for is them to hand over all rights. You should expect to pay for it unless you get a phoographer who doesn't know better.

Hire a stand-in bride and shoot them yourself and then PS you head in later ;-) j/k

Just remember when trying to negotiate for the DNs that most wedding photogs make a major part of thier money from print sales.

as many have said - you just need to pay for them. Some photogs bundle the cost of prints into the package, others expect to make most of the money from follow-on print sales.

So you need to pay what they expect to earn from the event + photos, or at least negotiate with awareness of that.

I got the film negatives from our wedding photographer, as part of our package. We paid quite a lot for that, but did our own printing.

Maybe if all you're going to use them for is for a digital frame and screensavers, maybe just ask a disk with low-resolution images (like 800x600) which they might be more receptive to (but still for a price).

Banff is less than an hour from Calgary - a city of over a million people and far too many wedding photographers. I'd look there as well...

I agree about seeing if you can get a photog from Calgary but I think your a little off on the time to drive there unless your excessivly speeding ;) Calgary to Banff is rite around 130km...

Hey Saiphfire, I used to be a wedding photographer based out of Calgary and I shot a number of weddings in Banff - I always included the digital negatives.

P.S. always had a white dress on a snowy-white backdrop without problems

good luck!

Hey Saiphfire,

Sorry about the earlier hijack, I used Images Unlimited for a 5 generation family shoot and a couple others and his prices are decent and he was great with us, I cant remember his name atm but you can call him at 253-0200 if you are interested...

Saiphfire...
I am a wedding photog and one of my packages is "all photos on a CD" with a copyright release...Tell you the truth, I prefer this because I dont have to go in and edit/print/put in a book...Much faster and if the bride or family does ask for a little help, I give it to them...Fixing one photo is much better than 500 or more...Shop around, I am sure you will find
a willing photographer...BTW, I charge 100.00 per hour for this option and
usually shoot 600-800 shots...

Salphfire - we sell the digital negatives as part of a package. Most photographers do these days. Expect to pay a fair amount for them and ask for copyright permission to print them. Most decent printers won't print without it.

Also, be respectful negotiating with the photographer. Remember this is their livelihood. I'm to the point of shutting down discussions with brides/moms who are out for a deal. A good wedding photographer work very hard for you on that special day. Not only is it about the final product as much as my ability to anticipate and see the shot, know my camera to get the best photo and to process it to get the best results.
