Hey all,

I need some advice, I currently own a Fuji Finepix S5500 and while I love it to bits, its a great camera for the price.

However Im wanting to get into Portraiture of all kinds and also still misc shots (depending on DPChallenges:P) and I just feel the perpixel res on my camera is a little low, especially for portraitures only a 4 megapixel. Im thinking I would be better off with a 10megapixel or something.

Im not sure what I can afford really (prolly nothing as I shouldnt be spending any but meh nevermind), so I just want some ideas for cameras I dont really wanna go into the 2000£ (so err 3500$) region of professional cameras, want it a bit cheaper than that but something thats still good enough to take high quality pictures.

I've looked at the D200 that looks like a good camera but im not sure, perhaps thats even more than I need.

Many thanks for your time in advance.

If you want a good budget slr, a Canon Rebel XT (body only) is $600 at B+H, and a 50mm 1.8 which is one helluva little lens for the price at about $80, so about $700 for a camera. I only say Canon because that's what I'm familiar with. Nikon would probably be just as good, but I don't know enough about them to honestly say here. If you wanted to step up a better quality and more versatile lens, people rave about the Tamron 28-75 2.8 lens that is relatively cheap at about $350. Save some of the rest for other accesories that you'll need like a cf card, extra batteries, case, and maybe a reflector set for your portraits (but you'll also need a stand for it or an assistant to hold it). Good luck.

Edit: a decent tripod is also a good thing to get if you don't already have one.

Have a look at the D80... most of what the D200 has but half the price... depends on what you're willing to spend on glass I guess.

Thanks for the replys,

Firstly ye I do need some supplies, I have some things for my current camera, but I definitly do need a few more things, especially for portraiture.

Ill have a look at those 2 cameras, as for the D80, ye I saw that in a magazine today, its really difficult to say, as I want a good cameras that going to last me and be versatile enough for my needs.

Ill research more.

The D80 is a Fine camera. Like Shalrah said it has most of what the D200 has the most notable differences are the D200 has a magnesium body and can shoot 5fps the D80 is polymer and shoot at 3fps. I own one and it is a very nice 10mp camera for the money.

The thing is you need to consider the lenses as that is really what you are buying into. The body's are replaced every few years but the glass stays.

Good luck!

I would say that if you are looking sub $700 for a body i would recomend the canon 350 and at around $1000 the nikon d80 but as stated the real important thing is which lenses you want. the bodys will be replaced and "obsolete" lon before the lenses. you will also spend more int he long run on lenses if you are really going for quality.

both cameras will be pretty versital and do jsut fine for portraits.
