I was under the impression that php and mySQL were free source code. Am I wright? If so where can I download them. I need both to create my website. I will doing it on my own computer until I get all the kinks worked out then I will searching for a good host that will handle a large transfer volume.

Thanks,
SDW

php.net and mysql.com.

If you're doing this at home I soooooooooooooooooooooooooo recommend doing it on a linux box, it's one-two-three done and you're going.

eta
and you don't have to d/l anything when you do the install.

Both are open source, but work on the server. Your host will have them installed and ready to roll. You can program in PHP using an editing program and just upload to the server. I don't think you can set up the sql until you access it on the server. At least that is how I have always done it.

mysql

PHP net

Going the LAMP route (linux-apache-mysql-php) is nearly a no-brainer these days - you can make them all work with very little effort on your part. Look into a good linux distro and you'll be good to go.

Doing php/mysql/apache on a winders box is a waste of time.

Thanks for all the advice. So when I sign-up with a host you are saying its better to be on a Linux server, not window?

And is it possible for me to setup a computer server (not the computer I use) to be a host at my house while I build the site and test before uploading to a dedicated server/host.

Sorry for so may questions but soon everyone will see why I'm wanting to do this.

For sure if you are doing PHP and Mysql.

You can set that stuff up on any computer before uploading to your hosting site. It can even be on the computer you use on a daily basis.

If you want to set it up on another computer, you can do this on another physical computer or on a virtual computer (a la Virtual PC, if on Windows, or VMWare for other operating systems).

If you are setting up a staging site on your windows machine, download

WAMP

//www.wampserver.com/en/

It installs everything you need in one fell swoop; I had trouble when I upgraded my MySQL server on my local machine to 5.0x, and WAMP handled that beautifully.

If you get a virtual host, get on a Linux box and they have everything installed for you "usually".

Thanks for the info about a staged site. That is exactly what I want to do on a windows machine. I guess I can do it on my current computer or should I use a dedicated computer? If I can put it on my local machine (the computer I use everyday) do I need to install it in a different drive letter/partition?
Thanks,

Free downloads for mysql can be found here - I think the .com part of the site concentrates more on the commercial part.

There's no real reason why to put a staging site on a dedicated box, unless you really don't want to touch your main machine, or either the machine or the test site will be under heavy load.

If you do want to run a dedicated box, you may be better off in the long run using a basic machine and installing one of the many versions of Linux onto it, instead of windows. The whole php/mysql/apache experience is more streamlined on a Linux box and using it would get you used to working as if on a remote host.

I too would recommend using linux for php and mysql. It's much easier on linux then windows. Also, nobody mentioned any linux distros, so I thought I would recommend a distro called Ubuntu. If you are at all interested in trying linux out, this is where I would start. It's based off of debian linux and is very simple to set up. It supports a ton of hardware and is very easy to use and update. The distro now uses a "LiveCD" so you can boot into the linux system just by having your computer boot from CD! Once running in the live desktop you can click the install icon on the desktop and install linux while surfing the web... very very cool. If you don't like it, just reboot, remove the CD, and you're back to windows... Simple! It's by far my favorite linux distro.

Woke up thinking "Ubuntu", so I'll second that as a distro.

You can do it on your current computer. It doesn't matter. I put it on all my computers!

just some fyi...

i just installed WAMPServer 2.0 on my vista laptop. this is a nice package, including (as of jan 25, 2010) apache 2.2.11, php 5.30, and mysqul 5.1.36.

everything went smoothly, until i tried to connect to localhost; then i got the error "Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at localhost"

when i checked my hosts file (C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts), for whatever reason, there was no entry for local host. after adding an entry, everything is beautiful ;-)

127.0.0.1 localhost

If you are looking for a good host, I use inmotionhosting as my hosting provider.

Disk space and bandwith is unlimited with the business class plans.
